Access to financial resources is one of the main reasons people become sex workers. However, other marginalizing and socio-economic factors greatly effect the ability workers have to work indoors, work independently, and/or take precautions such as screening and turning down abusive clients.
During times of desperation, sex workers are especially vulnerable to violence and trafficking. Directly providing funds to workers is a form of harm reduction that makes it so that folks who are struggling to afford necessities such as food, utilities, phone service, and transportation are able to get these needs met without having to compromise their boundaries or safety!
This is why the sex worker-led Lysistrata Mutual Care Collective and Fund needs your help! Your donation can be the difference between a sex worker being able to work under safe conditions or needing to put themselves at risk of being sex trafficked.
Lysistrata’s experience in the industry has taught us that one of the best ways to ensure that sex workers are able to work in ways that preserve their safety and well being is access to financial resources during difficult times in their lives and careers. In such a diverse industry anything from economic slow downs, the shut down of advertising platforms, burn out, illness, injury, homelessness, wrongful arrest and incarceration, unstable or abusive working conditions, domestic violence, discrimination and a myriad of other factors can often negatively and drastically effect sex workers' ability to do their job in the ways that are best for them. Such circumstances are often exacerbated by other marginalizing factors such as race, gender, class, parenthood and chronic illness.
Often, people in our community have to resort to individual fundraisers to cover expenses such as unexpected medical bills, to develop new skills to aid in diversifying their incomes, and in the wake of violent events that render them unable to work. To try and help cover some of these expenses before they spiral out of control Lysistrata MCCF maintains an emergency fund to support vulnerable people in the sex industry and give our community somewhere to turn when they are facing hardships.
Your donations will go directly into replenishing this fund so that Lysistrata can continue to bridge the gap for sex workers in crisis through direct, immediate, emergency financial assistance. Part of your donation also supports the small team of sex workers (most of whom are of color) who tirelessly work to maintain the Lysistrata Mutual Care Collective and Fund; sponsor, host, and/or participate in events/activities that promote sex worker advocacy, community, and networking; partner with other sex worker led organizations and projects to supplement necessary services and promote visibility for the work that is already being done in our community, and work towards building new financial and living structures that provide protection, accessibility, and resources to the most marginalized members of our community.
