Justice for Majiza

**2021-04-19 UPDATE: 7 years ago, Majiza was subjected to brutal excessive force at the hands of an SPVM officer. She is currently in the process of suing the City of Montreal and the officers involved for $700,000 for illegal conduct, assault and excessive force resulting in serious permanent injury. Please consider funding Majiza's ongoing battle for justice. She is a loving friend, excellent tap dancer, and valued teacher to so many.

You can read more about Majiza Philip's case in this article released by the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations: http://www.crarr.org/?q=node/20072

We are attempting to raise funds on behalf of Majiza Philip to help cover her legal fees after she was brutally assaulted by Montreal police officers. She is already $2000 in debt as a result, so any and all donations are appreciated. This is the only way to hold police officers accountable for their actions and to see justice prevail.   My name is Mark Richards and I set up this page with her permission, but not at her behest.  I am doing this because I believe in justice and because I believe in Majiza Philip. Thank you.

In November 2014, two days before her 26th birthday, Majiza Philip, a young black woman, had her upper arm shattered by Montreal Police using a baton, in an egregious use of excessive force. The Police then filed an assortment of charges after the fact to protect themselves from the fallout. At trial, Majiza was completely and unequivocally exonerated by Municipal Court Judge, Katia Mouscardy, who went on to state that Majiza was a more credible witness than the four police officers whose stories contradicted each other and who conveniently forgot to mention the broken arm during their testimony. The officer who was responsible for the injury went so far as to claim amnesia due to stress. In acquitting Majiza  of all charges, the judge accused the officers of "camoufler" (a camouflage or cover-up). The Montreal Police Ethics Commission, the body responsible for protecting citizens rights, closed their investigation a full year before the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, in part, because Quebec police officers are not required to cooperate with Police Ethic Commission enquiries. The only option left is to challenge the police in civil court, if any justice is to be obtained for Majiza. This page is to help her with the legal fees. Majiza is a chef and teaches tap dancing to children in the tradition of her grandmother, Ethel Bruneau, a local Montreal legend. She has one of the purist hearts of anybody I know. I have been a public school teacher for 35 years and I am a friend and a student of Majiza Philip. - Mark Richards
