Update Oct 2019

For the last two years Jean Paul has attended two rehabilitation centres and received physiotherapy to start using other parts of this body. Unfortunately the rehabilitation has been started too late for J-P and due to the poor health service for the disabled in Rwanda, Mama Jackie decided to care for him at home.

I visited them two years ago, where they were sleeping on the floor, Mama was carrying him on her back and cooking three meals a day by fire wood.
During this time a wheelchair was delivered for J-P and he so happy to use it!

Due to the large amounts of rainfall in Rwanda this time of the year Mama is finding it more and more difficult to find dry fire wood which impacts meals and nutritional health.

Mama Jackie and J-P have been living on $1 a day (which is 70p). I want to be able to change that and increase it to $10 (£7.70) which means Mama can buy a small bed / mattress, cook using gas and buy more variety of fruits and veg at the market.

THE GOAL!

$10 / day = £231 / month = £2,810 / year

A few pounds a day does not make a significant difference to our lives, however in homes of extreme poverty all it takes is £7 more a day to raise living conditions dramatically. It could mean being able to cook a meal that day or not.

I hope you can help this small and special family :)

Murakoze Cheyne!

Below is the full story from 2014:

Thank you for viewing this page! As most of you know we volunteered in an orphanage in Rwanda and we came across two beautiful people who we would like to help...

Here is their stories:

All orphanages in Rwanda are to be closed by January 2015. Since this legislation came into place two years ago, orphans in Rwanda have been taken from their safe homes and 'intergrated' into community 'family units' through adoption by distant relatives or unrelated foster parents - essentially strangers. There is no social or psychological support for these children and many are forced back into poverty and potentially much worse. These orphans who's futures were filled with hope and security are now bleak.

Since we have arrived at L'Esperance, an inspirational orphanage with a name meaning 'hope', we have made friends with a VERY special child...

J-P, Jean-Paul, Nzovu (baby elephant in Kinyarwanda)

J-P is an uncontrollably excitable four year old with one functional arm, which he uses perfectly to feed his insatiable appetite and to bum shuffle at the speed of light! He was born with cerebal palsey which causes brain damage affecting his right arm, both legs and his ability to communicate. In addition to this he was found abandoned in a forest only a few days old. Following medical attention at the local hospital, he was bought to L'esperance which became his home.
Interactive and challenging physiotherapy sessions and ingenious equipment designs with the local carpenters, along with the love and attention all children deserve, he has shown his potential to learn, gain strength and allow his true personality to shine through. He is bursting with happiness, playfulness, intelligence and most of all love.

Mama Jackie:
Jackie has been a loving and caring Mama for orphan babies at L'Esperance for the past 5 years. Her past is scattered with loss, pain and tragedy like so many Rwandanese due to the Genocide of 1994. With no children of her own, she found peace and purpose at L'Esperance.
She has chosen to continue her journey of motherhood by adopting J-P to create a strong and inspirational family.
