Did you know …
- There are more than 6,000 homeless people in the city of Atlanta
- In Atlanta, 2,000 people sleep on the streets at night
- More than 10,000 people in metro Atlanta experience homelessness on any given night
- More than 40 percent of those people are women and children
- Nationwide, over 57,000 veterans are homeless each night
- Most homeless people suffer from a mental disability, are dealing with substance or alcohol abuse issues, or have lost everything following a catastrophic financial setback (lost a job, incurred large medical bills, etc.)
On November 10, JOYN, along with other local companies & volunteers from The Backpack Project, will spend the day assembling & distributing backpacks to homeless individuals around Atlanta.
For $20, The Backpack Project will purchase the necessary supplies to fill a single backpack with items that can help the homeless through difficult times (usually about 40 items/bag), such as:
- 2400 calories (= to over 13 bananas)
- 65 grams of protein (= to the protein of 10 PB&J’s)
- Toothbrush and toothpaste (= to 3 months of oral hygiene)
- Deodorant (= to 2 months of use)
- Additional personal care items
- Clothes (socks are provided by the Shark Tank guys!)
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Our goal is to raise the funds to sponsor 100 BACKPACKS—that’s $2,000! (10/4/17 UPDATE: Since we've already hit our goal and still have a ton of time to continue fundraising, we've raised it to $3,000!)
You can help by donating the funds to sponsor 1, 2 or 20 backpacks … however many you’d like! You can also share this page with your friends and family who might like to sponsor a backpack (or two!)
NOTE: Since the folks at The Backpack Project buy the backpacks and supplies at wholesale prices through various connections, a monetary donation offers greater purchasing power than a donation of supplies.
