Volunteer in the Slums of Rio de Janeiro

The year 2008 marked the first time in history that more than half of the world's population (3.3 billion) lived in cities. By the year 2030, the urban population is expected to swell to 5 billion people, many of whom will be poor. With joy and a thankful heart, I have the opportunity to serve families living in the favelas in Brazil, extremely impoverished slums on the outskirts of the city. I will join a small group of volunteers from around the U.S. to minister in Rio de Janeiro providing prayer, God's love, and the gospel message to primarily the children, but not limited to them. We will also provide as many hygiene products, vacation bible school and art supplies as we can collect.
I have served my community here in Seattle walking the streets offering prayer and the love of God to all. It continues to bless my life tremendously.
As I visited with new friends who recently moved to the U.S. a question they asked stuck in my mind in reference to church attendance, "Where are the people?" They continued, "In my country every service is full. There are people standing outside to hear the message."
Also during this time in my life a well known praise and worship song by Martin J. Nystrom, a native of Seattle, based on Psalm 42:1, 2 caused me to contemplate my thirst and longing for God.
In answer to my prayers I believe God is not only giving me the opportunity to be used as His hands, feet, voice and heart outside the U.S., but to grow in my relationship with Him, so I can be used more effectively at home. Please, please pray God's will be done.
The 9 day trip is planned for the end of July. The cost, which includes $900 living expenses, about $1500 round-trip airfare and $240 passport/visa fees, totals about $2640. I have contributed $675, now i need your help. Please donate today. All funds are needed by the end of May. So please don't delay.
