Jovinnew School Fundraising

Back in 2012, my wonderful friend Lindsay Williams set up Volunteer to Change (VTC), in a very deprived village called Kokrobite in Ghana. She discovered a tiny tin shack where 30 of the poorest children would gather underneath every morning. They had no tables, chairs, school resources or even toilets - but regardless, the students were so desperate to learn & the teachers so keen to teach. VTC made it their mission to provide these children with a school to be proud of.

Fast forward to 2018, thanks to the hard work, fund raising, sheer love & persistence from VTC & Lindsay with volunteers and sponsors across the world, Jovinnew International Academy is now completely unrecognisable. Over the last 6 years, the school has transformed into an impressive brick 5 classroom building, full of bright furniture, packed with school resources, books & toys, now with 6 teachers & 260 children. The school is now self-sufficient, maintaining themselves using money from school fees, which is everything we could have hoped to achieve and more, all those years ago.

Tragically, this week all of this hard work & love has come crashing down. A careless accidental fire set by a neighbour, caused the thatch roof to catch a light. It took 3 fire engines to finally extinguish the fire, leaving just the shell of a building. The handmade tables & chairs are ruined & all of the children's books, toys & learning materials destroyed. Thankfully, nobody was badly injured in the fire, although several of the teachers (including Eric) suffered burns as a result of trying to salvage some of their belongings. Emotionally, of course, the trauma of having to witness their treasured school go up in flames is unimaginable & they are heartbroken.

So.. I'm reaching out to you, my lovely friends & family, to ask if you can spare as little as £1 towards this very worthy cause. Together we can contribute towards the re-roofing & restocking of the school, to ensure those 260 darling children don't have to be without education for any longer than necessary - a privilege we definitely take for granted in the Western world.

I've never done anything like this before (it feels very strange asking directly for money!) but as you know, this is a cause so close to my heart as I have had the honour of visiting this school for the past 6 years. Unfortunately, I'm unable to fund this one independently this time. I will provide updates every step of the way, of course.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

All my love,

Anna X
