It's hard to believe that Jovan is a young 19 year old, though his current abilities do not match up as other typical 19 year old peers...
From the moment he wakes up, Jovan is very alert and demanding. He has obsessive and compulsive behaviors, he has challenges with self-help skills and is not able to appropriately articulate his needs or wants without prompts from an iPad for basic picture-exchange communication.
It is painful to see Jovan wanting to interact with other children but not having the insight or skills to do so. Autism has affected Jovan's ability to communicate his feelings and thoughts as well as impacting his understanding of the world around him. As you might imagine, as parents of an individual with additional needs, we have cried and despaired about Jovan's future.
Over the years, Jovan has dealt with various digestive issues such as a leaky gut where there are things that do not properly breakdown in his system. He has taken Digestive Enzymes, high fiber foods, supplements, various Probiotic’s and so forth. Many children on the autism spectrum have issues with the microbiome in their gut. These leaky toxins that do not process properly have been known to travel up to the brain to “fog up” overall cognitive ability that includes speech or lack thereof.
FMT (Fecal Microbiota Transplant) is the therapy that has given us hope and why we are raising money. FMT is proven to reduce behavioral problems, gut issues and improves language as well as social interactions for children with Autism. This would allow Jovan to build relationships, possibly find employment and live his life to the fullest.
Even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this treatment for Jovan, it is not covered by his insurance.
Any financial support you are able to give to help Jovan is massively appreciated.
Jovan is completely nonverbal and has minimal communication abilities, despite many hours of therapy and access to several communication devices. As a result, he has missed so much of his childhood; he has missed opportunities to interact with others and develop meaningful relationships, to perform regular tasks and self-care activities.
We are determined to help him get as much of that back as he can. While we have been able to help him recover a lot of these skills and abilities, his main issues that continue to persist are: lack of language, social and cognitive skills. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see him cry and get upset because he is not able to communicate his wants or needs or express his thoughts.
We have spent countless hours researching, consulting our medical team, and praying for direction and guidance on the next steps to help him with these areas. We need to do a more aggressive therapy in order for him to recover his voice. We are desperate to help him. This next big step for him is this Fecal Transplant Therapy.
Many studies have found that there is a connection between gut health and autism. After many tests, we know Jovan has an abundance of bad bacteria in his digestive track. This procedure will take a healthy stool sample and transfer it to his digestive tract and help him rebuild. These treatments could potentially wake Jovan's brain up and help him to communicate as well as interact with the world around him.
We believe God can bring good out of every situation, and we are so grateful for His blessings and all that we have learned through this journey.
Our entire lives have been altered and dedicated to living a healthy, holistic, toxic-free lifestyle. We have learned how to cook and prepare whole, unprocessed, organic foods; how to best filter our air and water; how to eliminate chemicals and synthetics in our home and more. We hope to be able to ‘pay it forward’ to others one day with all of the knowledge and information we have learned and live out each day. And we are dedicated to using anything else we find in our research that can help our son, as well as ourselves, to lead as healthy a life as possible.
We realize FMT might not be an outright "cure" for our son, but it will definitely improve his quality of life, and hopefully give him a voice. It's not easy or comfortable to ask for financial help, especially when we have always been so independent and live very frugally; but we believe in the good of our community, and most importantly, we will stop at nothing to help our son. We want him to live a productive and fulfilling life, and we are asking for any help you can give.
