Journalism Trip to New York City

Donation protected
As we head into high school this upcoming fall, we have a developing view of the world, and are always looking for ways to expand our knowledge. One thing we do know is the power and importance of our own voice. We also know, “What’s a voice if you don’t share it?" Our history teacher emphasizes the significance of freedom of the press throughout our country's past as a way for the people to keep the government honest. We are fascinated by journalism because it opens doors to the outside world beyond our school and local community. Every day, at school or at home, we read articles and learn many new things about what’s going on in the world. Reading these articles make us appreciate the knowledge we’re given whether it’s from a newspaper, magazine, or a website. We recognize that we have talents to use this information to help us create positive change in our world. Information can help us succeed, make the right decisions, and become well-informed citizens. We understand we do not have the right to have an uninformed opinion.

This summer, we have been offered the wonderful opportunity to travel to New York City and put our journalism skills into action. We will dig deep into this city and go behind the scenes interviewing companies, cultural icons and business leaders while writing for FastForward Magazine. FastForward gives young people a platform to share their voice. In past summers, students have had opportunities such as interviewing the cast of “Hamilton” on Broadway, the editors of Teen Vogue and Vogue Magazine, actors Edward Norton and Steve Buscemi, news anchors David Muir at ABC World News and CNN’s Don Lemon. We are excited by this  journalism experience that will take us to interview others, as we know that listening to others can change our lives.

We are excited to study journalism in the same city that John Peter Zenger successfully fought for freedom of the press in the 1730s. In our current world of social media and “fake news,” it is important to respect the fundamentals of journalists who speak the truth and research the facts. We recognize that this special trip is a great opportunity we don’t want to miss. It is the experience of a lifetime that could set the foundation for a successful career in journalism. It gives us a chance to not only have the time of our lives, but to meet new people, use and improve our writing skills, and experience the culture of New York City.

We are so inspired by travel and exploring new places while documenting our experiences with photos and travel journals. After every trip, we always put together a GoPro video to document our memories and share them with others. On this trip, we will write for a magazine that will be shared with way more people than we’ve ever imagined!

We are funding our trip many ways, including bake sales, working around the neighborhood, and sponsorships. We are also looking for additional help for a total of $1500 for each us from family and friends. It would mean so much to us if you could donate, or even spread the word about our fundraiser! Any amount of money will be greatly appreciated. If you decide to donate, you will be added to our subscription list. We’ll send you photos, a video, and an issue of the magazine that we helped create. Thank you very much for considering a donation of any amount. We are forever grateful for your inspiring support.
