The Gift of Sight for My Son

Have you ever seen those videos where a person can hear for the first time? Or they put on a pair of specialty glasses and they can see the world in all the vibrant colors that have been invisible to them their whole lives? Have your eyes filled with tears of joy as you celebrate with those total strangers? Those tears probably don’t compare to the tears I cried when I came across a video of a man seeing his family for the first time—a man who suffers from the same degenerative eye disease as my son. Like my son, his vision began to blur as a child and just got worse… and worse… and worse.
Stargardt disease is hereditary. It’s the sneaky kind of hereditary disease that shows no sign of itself in the parents but then attacks their children. Stargardt didn’t exist in our world until it turned it upside down. Imagine finding out your son is going blind and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Then, imagine that you find out your genes are responsible for it.
And now, imagine that you can help your child see again. Only, you don’t have to imagine anymore. The technology exists and is called eSight. My son can actually put on a pair of glasses that reconfigure and enhance the world around him, allowing him to see the world as a whole instead of the blurry, peripheral fragments he has to piece together.
We can hardly control our joy at the mere prospect of my son's vision improving—Please help it become a reality. The glasses cost $10,000. It is a lot of money yet such a small price to pay for the gift of sight.

And if we are so lucky as to go over our $10,000 goal, every additional dollar will go towards our two other children who were born before our son’s diagnosis—both of which have also been diagnosed with the disease. Their conditions have not deteriorated as much as my son’s but it is only a matter of time.
