Joshua is cycling to the WSJ in South Korea!

Hello there! My name is Joshua Dean, and I have been involved in Scouting in East Devon since I was 6 years old. I am currently part of the Powder Monkeys Sea Explorer Unit in Uplyme and am also a young leader with 1st Lym Valley Scout group.

I have recently been selected as one of 72 young people to represent Devon at the World Scout Jamboree in SaeManGeum, South Korea, during the summer of 2023.

Whilst in South Korea, I will be learning about other cultures and religions and mixing with Scouts from all over the world, promoting peace, teamwork and understanding. I feel very privileged to be one of 40,000 young people who will be attending this event.

Being selected is only the beginning of my journey. To be able to join scouts from around the world, I need to raise £3,000. I will be taking part in many fundraising activities over the next 18 months to help me reach my target; some of these will be with the Explorers from my own unit, and others will be with members of my Jamboree Unit.

I have decided to start my fundraising by setting myself an individual sponsored challenge. I am going to cycle the distance from my Scout Hut in Uplyme, Devon, to the location of the 25th World Scout Jamboree, a total distance of 5,700 miles. I aim to complete this before the start of the Jamboree on 1st August 2023. I will cover the distance using my bike as well as an exercise bike and am hoping to build my stamina and strength along the way.

Your donation will not only help fund the cost of the Jamboree but will also cover travel, food, and training camps. In addition, part of the Jamboree fee is used to enable Scouts coming from poorer countries to attend. So, as well as myself, you will also be helping other young people have a once in a lifetime experience.
