On Friday, Oct 27, at the Owl-O-Ween festival at KSU, Joshua was tumbling with his friends from Ninja Quest. After a few successful passes, he attempted a skill he has done many times before. He misjudged his landing (due to poor lighting) and landed on his head. We would learn later that he dislocated his C5 & C6 vertebrae in his neck. The doctor said that basically, he broke his neck. Initially he had no feeling in his body from his chest down. He was taken for immediate surgery (done by a neurosurgeon) and has been recovering in ICU since then.
As of today, he has feeling in his arm, hands, legs, feet, and feels tingling all over. He can move both arms, both legs, and is working on his dexterity with feeding himself. We are excited to see some progress. Josh has a long road of recovery ahead but he is encouraged and determined to come back better than ever!
Joshua's family is working hard on getting him transferred to the Shepherd Center where his inpatient rehab can begin. We are uncertain about how long he will be there because everything depends on his recovery. Shepherd would like to make sure his family can meet his medical needs for care once he is discharged. This includes hiring outside help (Home Health Care) for around the clock care.
Anything you can donate to make this possible would be greatly appreciated. Please donate TODAY as he can not be admitted to the Shepherd Center without a good portion of these funds in place. The neurosurgeon at Kennestone hospital has already put in orders to have him transferred and his insurance may stop coverage for his stay at Kennestone. We need him transferred AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
