Josh's 500-Mile Colorado Trail Hike

Donation protected
I made this GoFundMe page for my awesome dad, Josh Hellstrom, who is going to thru-hike the 486 miles of the Colorado Trail this summer.

"I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in March 2014. There are over 30 different types of NHL and more than a dozen aggressive types of Lymphoma, so I got pretty scared when my doctor told me I had Lymphoma. I didn’t know what type it was and it is impossible not to fear the worst. Fortunately I got very lucky. My Lymphoma is a less aggressive, low-grade cancer. It is not curable, but it is very treatable and was caught pretty early. It is not in any of my major organs or in my bone marrow. It was scary, but I went through chemotherapy treatments and after 6 months I am incredibly grateful to be in full remission. My chemo treatments will continue indefinitely, but only every 2 months now to keep a boot down on the disease. My plan is to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by hiking the full 486 miles of the Colorado Trail between my June and August treatments. I will be asking friends, colleagues, business associates, and family to donate to LLS. I am planning to write about the hike, include photo/video documentation, and will be happy to offer written thanks for any donations.

I am 56 years old. I have three incredible daughters, each in their 20’s, that will be joining me for portions of the trip. My wife has been totally supportive, so I am a very lucky man. Not a single day goes by that I do not give thanks for each day. It didn’t take getting Lymphoma to realize how lucky I am, but cancer has helped remind me how incredibly fortunate I am to have more time with my friends and family...more time to live.

And because of efforts with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, there have been advances in cancer research and treatment. My cancer treatments are no fun. I mean, I have been stuck with a lot of needles in the past few months, but the treatments aren’t nearly as bad as they have been in the past. I know that every family has hardships and many are far worse than my own. I believe the best way we can honor those who have suffered much more than I have or lost their lives to cancer is to live our lives well. Grab hold of this opportunity that is life and do some good with it.

So, I am going to spend 30 days this summer hiking close to 500 miles of the Colorado Trail. I would love and appreciate your donation to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society so that one day, we will have a cure. I wish you to live well and enjoy every day."
