Hi. My name is Joshua Summerlin. I’m a Life Scout in Troop 200 in Lafayette, and I’m a junior at Acalanes High School.
My Eagle Scout project is to provide a complete music program for Children of Faith Orphanage in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. I will send them 20 Ukuleles and 10 stands, along with books and CDs for the children and teachers to learn from.
I chose this as my project out of my passion for music and my effort to help an amazing group of kids that I had the opportunity to meet. I have played violin for over 12 years, and bass for 6 years. Music is a big part of my life, and I believe that every kid should be given the opportunity to play music if he or she wants to. I met the kids while I spent two weeks at the orphanage in the summer of 2017, on a mission project with my church. Now two years later, I still want to find a way to give back to all the amazing kids there. After seeing how important music is to them and how it brings joy to their lives, and because the founder wanted to start a music program for the kids, I decided to make this my project. Music is a very important part of my life, and I want the kids at Children of Faith to have the opportunity to benefit from learning to play an instrument.
Project Details
The music program will include ukuleles, lesson books, CDs, and music stands.
I chose ukuleles because it is an instrument that will allow them to find joy in music, with early and successful results.
In addition to providing the instruments and music books, I will bring together Scouts from my troop to learn a ukulele tune and record a video to send to Children of Faith. I hope that this video will show them how easy and fun it is to play music, and will inspire them when they receive their ukuleles.
How you can help bring music to Visakhapatnam
A donation of $25 will purchase a ukulele kit, including the Ukulele and a case and accessories.
A donation of $15 will buy a student edition of one lesson book, and $18 will buy a teacher’s edition of the lesson book. $45 will buy a complete set of the 3 books for one student.
A donation of $11 will buy a CD which goes with the lesson books.
My goal is to raise $2500
I met my original goal of $1550, and I'm thankful for the overwhelming response. If you're still interested in donating, I have many ideas to continue supporting the music program and would really appreciate the additional support. Every donation means a lot to the children at COF, but they're a long ways from having the kind of facilities and resources we have in the U.S. With your help, we can get these kids closer to the education that all children deserve.
