Some of you know, some don't, but back in December of 2023, I was let go from my Lead XR Software Engineer position from a company I had been working with for almost 3 years; it came as a huge shock, as I was actually meant to receive a promotion at that time. The company had gone through a big merger and couldn't afford to keep to keep their Senior Engineers (which was a stipulation), and our current 3 Seniors, including me; since I was the newest one, they had to let me go.
As many of you may know--specifically those who work in or adjacent to the games/tech industry, it's in shambles right now. Many other layoffs, so there are LOTS of people with amazing experience in need of jobs, and only a handful to fill. Since I was let off in December 2023, I have been sending out resumes to any and every job I could find that is even remotely relevant to my experience, at this point I've sent out close to 2000 applications, and have only received responses from a tiny portion of that. And nothing has panned out, from being ghosted, to multiple scams, to the position suddenly just being closed, to just losing out to better and more experienced candidates who are also out of the job. It's been daunting, draining, and a relentless pursue to try and secure something, and I'm still currently looking even currently.
We had some savings but being in Smyrna GA, our rent and bills have basically eaten us alive and we have drained everything just to stay afloat. But we are sadly at the point where we have nothing else to drain, we can make a few bucks here and there selling stuff or doing this or that, but it's not enough now. Those of you who know me, I'm disabled and my wife can only do so much as well. I've exhausted favors, and we have had amazing people help us to stay afloat this long, but pulling them in is only pulling them under too, and I can't justify that anymore.
We need help. Simple as that, to pay our basic bills and our rent so that we don't end up evicted, especially around this time of year. I know it's a lot to ask, but we could really, really use the help and the blessing to encourage an employer to finally bite. Every dollar counts right now, as we are counting cents. It's been an incredibly rough year, and it would at least put our anxiety at ease to know we have a home through the year, while I continue to try and bombard job listings and recruiters.
