Dear fellow friends and newcomers
My name is Jose Daniel Vargas, I am an incoming graduate student from Moultrie, GA who will be starting Midwestern University’s Dental Medicine Program this fall. I find myself very much in need of your help. Let me start by saying that getting accepted into dental school was not one of, but the proudest moment of my entire life. It took so much work, stubbornness and at many times blind faith to pursue this dream of mine. It has also been a very tough road for me in this country: from picking tomatoes to graduating with my bachelor’s in biology. From being rejected by countless medical schools for being undocumented to one day finally interviewing and receiving my acceptance letter. Out of 3,000 applicants I was one of the 4% that got accepted and I had truly believed that the most difficult part of my journey was already behind me. But I was wrong. Despite all of my hard work there is yet another outside force that stands in my way. Due to my undocumented status I am not eligible to receive any federal student loans. And because of this, for a long time I was relying on a state loan company, which agreed to finance me. After 2 long months of consideration, they backed out on me last minute with only a month left for my tuition deadline. And due to the fact that I cannot take federal or state loans, I am forced to resort to private loans, which as you can imagine charge extremely high interest rates. And not only that, but to even apply for said loans, I would need a U.S. citizen or resident co-signer.
Day after day I have searched for alternatives and after much debate, I have decided to start a fundraiser page. I do believe my difficulties are my own, which is why I have been working 2 jobs, 6-7 days a week, for the better part of a year now, to save up as much as I possibly can, as have my family. And although we have made great progress, the cost of tuition at Midwestern University is simply too high at $93,000 a year for 4 years. It has taken a lot for me to start this donation page, but with the tuition deadline so close, I don’t know where else to turn. It is why I have decided to seek help. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Whether it’s $10 or $100, every little bit adds up and helps me towards my education and my dream to go from Dreamer to Doctor to better serve my community. Any words of encouragement are also very much appreciated.
