Dear Friends, Family and Friends of Family,
For those who don’t know me, my name is Jordan Poarch. I am a student, coach, youth mentor and an aspiring professional soccer player. Soccer has been the focal point of my life for many years now. I am proud of my continued growth as a student-athlete — my work ethic, determination and resilience have resulted in continued improvement as a player and as a person. My years of hard work are now paying off as professional coaches are taking notice.
This past November, I attended a professional combine named “SoccerViza” The company hosts ID try-outs across the East Coast and selects the best players to participate in one regional combine in front of professional coaches and scouts from around the U.S. and abroad. In total, only two players gained interest from the professional Icelandic clubs and I was one of them!
As a result of this combine, I recently spent five days in Iceland trialing for a 2nd Division professional team named Knattspyrnudeild Vestrawhich. (My first challenge was to learn how to pronounce the name of my potential team!) The trial consisted of a private training session and a game against top professionals from a 1st Division team. In the end, I was not offered a contract by this club; however, my strong performance in Iceland greatly reinforced my belief in my ability to play professional soccer.
Upon my return from Iceland, it was time to reflect, and foremost, I needed to accept the work-world lesson that all of us eventually learn — that is the fact that that beyond our performance, there are many uncontrollable politics and logistics that impact our potential job offers — or in my case, a professional signing. I also, of course, asked myself what’s next and how realistic was my goal of playing professional soccer. The answer was surprisingly clear — I will focus on what I control and I will continue to work hard as I pursue my dream.
Over the past 18 months, I have been invited to participate in a number of professional combines where coaches and agents have commented upon my exemplary tactical and ball-handling skills. That said, it has been my speed that has consistently set me apart from my competition. In Iceland, it was evident that our opponent from the Premier League of Iceland did not have anyone to match my speed, and thus, I returned home more confident and more determined than ever. And now, a rare opportunity has presented itself as a talent scout from Trinidad and Tobago has just asked me to attend a February 8th combine in the Czech Republic to play in front of professional scouts and coaches from all over the globe!
So, I write this long letter in hopes that you might support my quest that now takes me to Czech Republic. I have dedicated most of my life to the game of soccer and the hundreds of hours spent in the gym and on the field for the past four months has me in the best possible shape for these upcoming trials. My family continues to be supportive of me and my dream — a dream that becomes more realistic with every passing month. What I now need is the funding for basic travel and accommodation so that I might attend these professional combines. I am hopeful that you can support me with whatever amount you can.
