Jonah's Fight

Jonah Ryzo Carvalho Carceres

Jonah, fondly known by his daddy as 'papi' was such a special child from the moment he came into our lives. He had many names because one was not enough for such a beauitiful and bright soul. Jonah however, much preferred to be called 'Gekko' after his favourite little green superhero, who goes "into the night to save the day".

Jonah arrived into this world on 21st June 2015 on his nanny Diane's 50th Birthday. Any of you who where lucky enough to know our little Gekko, will know exactly what we mean when we discribe him as a 'whirl wind of love' who stole our hearts the second he arrived.

A day never went by without him smiling, laughing, dancing and getting into all sorts of trouble with his big sister Cyra (3). Irish twins who were never apart, they would sing and dance for everyone, especially to his favourite song "walking in the jungle". His blanket otherwise known as his 'kiki' was trailed around everwhere with him, and it always made us laugh when his mummy had to wash and dry it before he woke up, or when his nanny had to hoover his hair before she was allowed to clean her floors.

It is a comfort to us all that although his life was short, he knew nothing but love in the time he blessed our lives. For such a small boy, he taught us all so much in those two wonderful years. It would be so easy to feel sad in these days ahead but just like our little gekko, we will live life to the fullest, love the hardest, and forgive the easiest in celebration of our beautiful Angel.

Jonah was diagnosed with a brain tumour after we fought so hard for a diagnosis, unfortunately four days later on Tuesday 18th July 2017 he passed away surrounded by family and friends. Although our hearts will forever be broken, we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now safe in our Granda Andy's arms.

This is only the beginning of Jonah's fight as we carry his memory forward in a bid to help families like ours to make sure every child gets the help they deserve. Our aim is to make sure all children have access to MRI's and other screenings when they dont feel like they are getting the help they need, to help pay for respite time for the families who are struggling with the demands of a sick child, and to just try and make the the hardest fight of a families life, just that little bit easier.

#JonahsFight isnt over, It is only just beginning.

We would like to thank all of the staff in the intestive care unit at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children for their amazing support over the 4 days we were there, and words will never be enough to thank them for trying to save our little dude, they fought until the end, and now we will continue the fight for others.... "into the night to save the day".
