Jon Lipka has been a gardener in the Kirkland area for the past 25 years. He has a genuinely positive outlook on life and shares it with all of those he encounters. Jon has always tried to live by the motto, "It's better to serve those who need it the most rather than those who have the most."
On August 15, 2018, Jon tried to stop a man from stealing his work truck and all of his equipment. In the process, Jon was thrown to the ground and landed chin first. His jaw was broken in several places and he lost 7 teeth. Due to complications with the accident, Jon developed internal bleeding that put him into intensive care for 4 days.
Since the accident, Jon has been through 3 surgeries--1 for his jaw and teeth and two for the internal bleeding. That's just the beginning, as there will be extensive work needed to repair his existing teeth and replace the ones that were necessarily removed. Medical insurance is helping with much of the costs but there are significant coinsurance and deductibles plus some procedures that may not be covered at all
Jon's view of his assailant is the following:
"I hope we can catch this guy and get him off the streets so he stops hurting people. But then it is equally important that we not just put him behind bars--we need to help rehabilitate him so that when he gets out again, he doesn't feel like he has to go on with stealing cars and hurting people. We need to educate our criminals and give them new skills to draw upon."
Funds that are raised with this GoFundMe page will be used to help Jon off-set some of the out-of-pocket medical and dental expenses that have been mounting.
Jon will donate all unused funds to organizations that provide victim support services and criminal rehabilitation.
