Send Johanna to US v. UK story slam

I am a storyteller. I love telling stories. It makes me come alive.  There's nothing I love more than the way a good story can shorten the distance between two people. When I have the opportunity to tell a story, everything else falls away and I'm transported into the world of the story with whomever I'm talking to, and anything is possible. "Jojo tell us a story!" is an invitation I love to say yes to.

I help other people tell stories, too. I've helped women in jail and adolescent girls and senior adults and entrepreneurs and moms and dads and doctors and dancers and teachers tell their stories. I've helped people who know they have a story lurking somewhere underneath the surface but they can't find the words. I've helped people who think they don't have a story to tell dig a little deeper and find out that in fact they have a very important story to tell. I help people tell stories with authenticity and gusto, in ways that transform their lives and the lives of the people around them. Telling our stories changes lives. Period.

A year and a half ago, I started Truth Be Told: Boulder's Bi-Monthly Story Slam with Nina Rolle, a fellow story lover. We wanted to get on stage and tell stories. We wanted to support other people in telling their stories on stage. We wanted to build a community of people who love stories. And that's what happened, and is still happening. Truth Be Told is a vibrant community of story lovers and it is going strong.

And, it's part of a wider movement of storytelling that's spreading across the nation. Story Slams are popping up everywhere. People are recognizing that when groups of people get together in a room and tell true stories about their lives, the world changes. I'm honored to have a part in making Boulder part of this movement.

Now I have been invited to go to London as a member of the US Story Slam team and compete in the UK v. US Story Slam competition in August. What a great opportunity this is! To be recognized for my storytelling and to represent the United States on an international stage would be such an honor (and totally cool). There will be 5 storytellers on the team: from Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, Portland and Boulder. With your help, I will be one of them.

Please join me in putting Boulder's storytelling community on the map and make a donation to help cover the cost of getting me to London this August. Any amount that you can contribute to help make this happen would mean so much to me.

The theme for the London slam is BORDERS. I'm gonna cross a few borders and tell a story in London. Then I'll come back to Boulder and tell you all about it. I promise it'll be a good story.
