Join Theresa and Michael's Fight for Their Kids

Hi, we are Theresa and Michael.
We are fundraising for our 3 wonderful children.

The story so far:
Our children are everything to us. They are 12, 10, and 6 years old. Over the course of their lives, each one has been diagnosed with at least one severe and chronic illness. The expensed, we found, are not just financial. We struggle emotionally, physically, and mentally every day as we try to stay afloat financially with three kids requiring constant care, hospitalizations, and treatments. If things continue this way, soon we will soon lose our cars, our home, and the ability to properly care for our children and support them with their illnesses.

All three of them were diagnosed with a chronic disease as early as their first year of life. Nicholas, our oldest child, with liver disease and severe asthma. Emilia has Type 1 diabetes with adjustment disorder. Our youngest, Alfredo, has cystic fibrosis. As if that were not hard enough on the little guy, he also struggles with severe sleep apnea and, like his older brother Nicholas, severe asthma.
We are in the hospital at least 3 days a week. Many of the most important medications are not covered by insurance. We are struggling to stay in our home as medical bills and all of the related expenses continue to pile up as the health of all three children declines. As the cost of transportation, medical bills, prescriptions and hospital visits for each child continues to increase, we repeatedly are forced to sacrifice our family's well-being tomorrow for the limited ability to take care of our children today. First it was one parent quitting the job to facilitate the exhausting amount of work it takes to keep the kids healthy. Then the other. Pretty soon, we found our savings dwindling down and the bills piling up. We need your help to keep our family home and continue to manage our children's health. It is by the grace of God, and support from our friends, family and church that we are able to make ends meet. Unfortunately, as things continue to decline and taking care of our children needs more and more of our attention, we are finding ourselves sailing a sinking ship. We need help from generous people such as yourself to continue to care for our children as we navigate through this tough chapter of our life.

Introducing our beautiful children:

The eldest, Nicholas.

Nicholas was diagnosed with severe asthma and sleep apnea in 2012 before he even turned 1 year old. Struggling to find a solution, the doctors finally settled on a steroid regimen. Nicholas was steroid dependent for the first six years of his life. The asthma didn't disappear, instead the heavy use of steroids resulted in damaging his liver. In 2018, the resulting liver damage finally started to show. Having liver disease on top of asthma, and sleep apnea, Nicholas' last 8 years have been hard on him. Not only has he been forced to cope with the physical symptoms of his diseases, but the medications have also resulted in rapid weight gain. At 12 years old and 170lbs, he goes through a pair of shoes a month and is constantly in need of new clothes. We are so busy with his constant care; I realize while writing this I haven't taken any new pictures in quite some time... This is Nicholas before the liver disease. With the onset of the liver disease came multiple new medications. Some of them are not covered by insurance yet are absolutely mandatory for Nicholas' wellbeing.

Our daughter, Emilia.

Emilia was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in March of 2023 just after turning 10 in December. The quick onset of the disease and several different attempts to control it have brought us to a medication that is semi-functional but rejected by her body. She struggles to cope emotionally with such a hard lifestyle change while at the same time dealing with the exhausting physical symptoms of using a medication that is not right for her. She participates in adjustment therapy 3 times a week. Because of the severity of the PTSD associated with her diagnosis, she even receives these visits at home to make sure she gets regular treatment. The struggle here for the family is again insurance. The correct treatments are not covered. In Emilia's case, we cannot afford to get the retail priced medication for her that would work better because we already pay out of pocket for some of Nicholas' medications. The adjustment disorder has also resulted in missed schooling, missed workdays, and priority out of pocket costs that take away income from other bills.

Our youngest child, Alfredo.

Alfredo is a soldier. Since he was born, he has struggled with severe sleep apnea and severe asthma. During one test he stopped breathing 110 times in one sleep cycle! He is supposed to be sleeping in a special bed which we are not able to afford. He had multiple surgeries and lots of hospital visits in his first few years of life. During one of his more invasive tests, the doctors discovered that Alfredo has Cystic Fibrosis. Not only does he have physically demanding treatments at night for the apnea, he has traumatic regimens during the day as well. A therapy vest has to be worn twice a day. In order to do what it needs to do, the vest pounds away at his chest for 30 minutes. He is so miserable, but he tries hard not to show it. Right now, we are managing Alfredo's medical conditions as well as we can, but for him we really need the therapy bed to help find some sort of relief at night. The bed also would help keep Alfredo safe. The apnea causes severe spasming when he stops breathing and we are terrified he's going to spasm the wrong way and really hurt himself.

We appreciate everyone who took the time to read about our kids. They are the center of our life, and we constantly struggle to give them the best quality of life that we can provide. Any help that you are willing to offer means the world to us and to our family. We welcome your prayers and are so very grateful for your love and support. Thank you for donating!
