Last March the lives of special friends of ours, Julia and Ron Smith, were turned upside down...
Ron was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the blood which damages the bones. In typical Smith fashion, Julia and Ron found out all they could about the disease from doctors and friends, and began the uphill journey towards healing, their goal being a stem cell transplant at Mayo Clinic! Their journey was sidetracked when one of Ron's meds attacked his muscles, greatly limiting his mobility. Through their determination, Ron is back on course and scheduled to begin the stem cell transplant process in late October.
While they have been blessed with health insurance that assists with some medical expenses, they are now facing another financial roadblock due to the required six week stay in Rochester during the procedure. Hotel costs alone will be over $9,000, not to mention transportation and meals.
