Join the fight for Logan's Life

On April 7, 2021, 18 month old Logan Michael Allen Olson began the fight of his life after nearly drowning in a freezing cold retention pond. Through the grace of God, prayers of thousands, quick response of good Samaritans, top tier medical professionals, and a little boy that refuses to give up, Logan is holding on.

While we remain hopeful and faithful, the fight is far from over. As Logan's parents and his healthcare team focus on regaining his strength, let's all rally together to support them.

Please read the words below from Logan's mom and dad, Erin and DJ.

We want to thank everyone for their kindness and faith. Wednesday; our lives changed forever. As you may have read or seen in the news, Logan was found unresponsive in a drainage pond. We’ve had time to process and piece together a time line and we’ve decided to share it with you as so many have asked.
Logan had his picture taken on the play set at 3:58p at daycare. DJ received a phone call at 4:06 that he couldn’t be found. Luckily he had just got home from work and was able to rush over. He walked back toward the pond and could see Logan floating face up in the pond. DJ went in the water and pulled his lifeless body out. Thankfully, there were people near the pond on the path who were able to perform CPR. Stewartville FD was dispatched at 4:11. I received a call at the office at 4:12 from DJ...he told me our son was dead. I immediately left work and sped to Stewartville.

Upon arrival, I ran toward the crowd of first responders performing CPR on our son. I dove to the ground and grabbed his hand. I said over and over “Lord please bring our son life”. DJ, joined me on the ground and we just kept praying and yelling to our son to come back. He made several breaths of his own and had a heartbeat as we laid by the pond. Mayo One was dispatched but Logan was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s. He coded in the ambulance but was brought back prior to arrival. We were not able to be with him in the ER right away but were able to watch from behind a door.

We spoke to police, social workers and staff. We were able to meet with the hospital Pastor and pray. Our parents were there with us. He was not responding to the efforts being made but we were all
Later that evening Logan moved his left foot and hands on his own.
We are happy to report that Logan’s heart and brain are functioning as they should. His other organs are healthy as well. Everyone we have spoke to has said they are hopeful for him. Cardiology, neurology, respiratory, infectious disease... everything looks good. They are continuing t
owed in the room to touch and talk to him. He was then moved to the ICU were more attempts to bring him life were made with little success. We were able to watch from outside the doors as they worked on him. They attempted using an oscillator to get him breathing on his own with no success. We were asked if we wished to continue manual life saving measures or attempt a procedure called ECMO (life support). It was not guaranteed that they would be successful in getting him on ECMO let alone it saving his life. We all gathered in the room with him and prayed one last time for a successful procedure. Following the procedure (hours later), Logan was stable enough for us to see him again. He was moved into a long term room in Mary Brigh where we remain. Logan’s chest is literally cut open with tubes and wires going in every direction. They took X-rays, labs and connected him to EEG equipment to monitor for seizures. He had life back in him, he was no longer cold and his skin had pinkness to it again.
o monitor him closely. There are two nurses in the room at all times keeping eyes on all of the equipment he is connected to. We’ve been told over and over that the quick action of Kersten, Darwin and our mystery people on the path ... saved his life. We will never know what happened and how he ended up in the water, but we do know he wasn’t in there long. The whole ordeal from the time we was last seen to the time he first received CPR was less than 15 minutes.

His lungs are the biggest concern right now. They have not regained their full strength which is preventing him from coming off of the ECMO and ventilators. His lungs have damage but he is expected to make a recovery. At this point; we wait. They took Logan off the machine for a f
ew moments today to see his response. His heart rate and oxygen levels were good but his blood pressure dropped quickly.

They hope to do another trial removal tomorrow morning, and we go from there.
Today he had his EEG leads removed. We can run our fingers through his hair again. It’s so nice to be able to touch him and talk to him. He is still sedated but able to move every limb, squeeze our hands and has started opening his eyes... things just 48 hours ago we thought we’d never have or see again.
We are so thankful for our faith in the Lord. For our family, friends and communities’ faith. Prayer is so powerful and there is no doubt that it saved our son. He is not out of the clear, we won’t know what is next or what recovery will be like until he is able to regain full consciousness, be removed from all machines and have an MRI.

We cannot express enough our gratitude to the men and women who saved and continue to care for our son. He has been touched by so many hands these last two days. We are blessed to be so close to the best hospital in the world.
