As you might know by now, each year, Team Ledschends takes on the legendary 24-hour Rad am Ring race at the Nürburgring in Germany. Not just for the thrill, but to raise funds for a cause that means something. We’re a team of passionate cyclists from around Europe and South Africa who believe in riding for something bigger than ourselves.
For this year, we’ve chosen to ride for Jessie Munton, a 17-year-old South African cyclist whose life changed forever earlier this year.
Who is Jessie?
Jessie Munton is a talented, bright, and determined young cyclist. She’s a South African national champion, a Youth Commonwealth Games representative, and a rising star on the international scene. At the start of 2024, she was living in South Africa and preparing for her biggest step yet: moving to Spain to pursue a full-time cycling career in Europe.
But just weeks before that move, on January 14 2024, everything changed.
While out on a training ride in South Africa, Jessie was hit by a drunk driver. She suffered a traumatic brain injury and was rushed into intensive care. She spent nearly a month in ICU, placed in both induced and natural comas. While doctors were able to stabilise her, the road to recovery is long and uncertain.
What is her condition now?
Jessie has now entered the next phase of her recovery: long-term neurological rehabilitation in Spain. She cannot yet walk, speak, or move independently. Every day is focused on small, slow steps toward rebuilding basic function.
Despite showing signs of awareness and determination, Jessie will require months, if not years, of intensive therapy to regain her independence.
Her family is doing everything they can, but the costs are overwhelming.
Why are we raising funds?
Jessie's medical costs far exceed what insurance and national cycling federations can cover. The estimate for six months of rehab, medical equipment, and home care support is over €100,000 (approximately 2 million South African Rand).
This includes:
Full-time specialist neurological rehab
Adaptive equipment (beds, chairs, lifts)
Physiotherapy, speech therapy, and cognitive therapy
Travel and living support for her family
Modifications for daily care and comfort
Her family has already incurred major expenses to keep her in care, and the financial burden is ongoing.
Why this matters to us
Many of us in Team Ledschends have South African roots or close ties to the cycling community there. Jessie’s story isn’t just one we heard; it’s one we feel deeply. She represents everything we believe in: passion, commitment, and the pure love of the sport.
That’s why this year, we’re racing for Jess.
From July 20–21, 2025, we’ll take on the brutal 24-hour challenge at the Nürburgring as a united team. While we push ourselves on the bike, we’re asking you to help push Jessie forward on her road to recovery.
How you can help
We’re asking for your support to raise critical funds toward Jessie’s care. Every euro donated will go directly to the Munton family to support Jessie’s recovery. Whether it’s €5 or €500, every contribution matters.
If you can’t donate, sharing this page with your network is just as powerful.
Together, we can help give Jessie a fighting chance, not just to recover, but to live fully again.
Thank you for riding with Jessie.
