She Deserves to Soar (SDS) (https://www.facebook.com/SDSoar) is a Kenyan, youth-led grassroots organization that embraces the power of education in addressing the challenges girls and young women face to reaching their full potential. SDS believes that, given the right tools and opportunities, girls can and will take control of their destinies and change the world.
Specifically, SDS focuses on protecting the rights of girls living in informal settlements in Kisumu, Kenya through advocacy, capacity building, and personal development training. Today, the pandemic is threatening the hopes and dreams of these girls. SDS is witnessing how a loss of family income due to the pandemic is forcing girls to drop out of school to earn money for their families, making them vulnerable to sexual exploitation, early marriage, unintended pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. These girls deserve better.
In response, SDS is connecting at-risk girls to psychosocial support and reliable information about their reproductive health. SDS is also focusing online programming on combatting the harmful gender norms that drive gender-based violence and the exploitation of girls and women. SDS recognizes the critical role that stable housing and economic opportunity play in forming girls’ futures, especially now. With this in mind, SDS seeks to raise $5000 to provide safe housing to at-risk girls and their immediate families. A small portion of the funds will also be used to provide capital for microenterprises to help girls gain economic stability beyond the pandemic. Through these two pillars -- housing and economic opportunity -- SDS believes these girls will not only survive this pandemic, but thrive once it is over, and ultimately, change their lives and this world for the better.
