This is my dear friend Kimberly. She is a ray of sunshine, a genuinely kind and loving soul who lights up any room she walks into. Kimberly puts on a brave face, even when presented with overwhelming challenges. She's been suffering in silence for years after being misdiagnosed by several doctors with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which led to chronic hemorrhaging and her eventual hospitalization in 2022.
Having finally found a doctor who is determined to identify the root of her condition and chart a course of treatment, Kimberly must now have a costly, surgical procedure. While the procedure itself is estimated at TT$50,000, Kimberly must now also cover the cost of additional medical expenses, which involves monthly doctor's visits, ultrasounds, iron and erythropoietin injections. She is currently severely anemic and must receive these injections to build up her hemoglobin levels prior to surgery. It is expected that the procedure will result in significant blood loss, and given that her condition currently remains untreated, building up and maintaining her blood count is critical to the success of her procedure.
Having spent the majority of her adult life volunteering and working part time, Kimberly does not have health insurance, and comes from a family of modest means. She therefore truly needs assistance in raising funds to cover, not only the cost of her procedure, but also pre- and post-operative treatments. Kimberly's procedure is scheduled for September 2024, but her pre-operative treatments began in June 2024 and will continue until September. Kimberly has a small community of family and genuine friends who love her, want the best for her and would be devastated if she were to lose her life because of being misdiagnosed or not being able to have this life-saving medical procedure. Given that she is already presenting with the symptoms that led to her hospitalization in 2022, it is urgent that she gets this surgical procedure done as soon as possible. We are all fully committed to contributing to her healthcare, but we are also appealing to the wider community to help us keep our ray of sunshine shining brightly.
