With active volcanic mountains, cool cloud forests, geothermal springs, expansive grasslands, cascading rivers, mangrove swamps, and sandy beaches the country has every imaginable non-arctic ecosystem. Costa Rica is a microcosm of this entire planet with an estimated 5 percent of the world’s biodiversity.
This small country supports innumerable species of plants and animals. There are 35,000 identified insect species and scientists estimate that there are another 250,000 yet to be discovered. There are 215 species of amphibians, from colorful tree frogs to the Giant Cane Toad. The trees and beaches are full of Green and Black Iguanas. Other reptile species include the Basilisk Lizard, which runs across water on its hind legs, and, of course, the massive sea turtle spawnings and hatchings in which thousands of these rare and amazing creatures are produced. Mammals include Tree Sloths, White Tailed Deer, 3 species of anteaters (including the Giant Anteater that consumes 30,000 ants a day), magnificent and loud Howler Monkeys, Spider Monkeys, Capuchin Monkeys, the cute and elusive Titi monkey, and a healthy number of Jaguars . A population of the endangered Jungle Tapir, a relative of the horse and elephant, survives in the forests and is the largest mammal in the country. Costa Rica has some 82 families of birds and over 900 individual species, including the mythic Quetzal, whose feathers were more valuable than gold to the ancient Maya and is legendary as a symbol of freedom. Quetzals absolutely refuse to live in captivity.
Besides birding and zoologic tourism, white water and ocean kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sport fishing, surfing, hiking, and horseback riding are all waiting. De todos los países de América, ninguno tiene la combinación de diversidad ecológica, comodidades para viajar y seguridad que hacen de Costa Rica la auténtica "Costa Rica".
Con montañas volcánicas activas, frescos bosques nubosos, fuentes geotérmicas, extensas praderas, ríos en cascada, manglares y playas arenosas, el país posee todos los ecosistemas no árticos imaginables. Éstos se extienden desde el Pacífico hasta el Atlántico (Caribe) en tan sólo 100 kilómetros (62 millas). Costa Rica es un microcosmos de todo el planeta, con un 5% de la biodiversidad mundial.
Este pequeño país alberga innumerables especies de plantas y animales. Hay 35.000 especies de insectos identificadas y los científicos calculan que quedan otras 250.000 por descubrir. Hay 215 especies de anfibios, desde coloridas ranas arborícolas hasta el sapo gigante de la caña. Los árboles y las playas están llenas de iguanas verdes y garrobos.
Otras especies de reptiles son el lagarto basilisco, que corre por el agua sobre sus patas traseras, y, por supuesto, los enormes desoves y eclosiones de tortugas marinas en los que se producen miles de estas raras y asombrosas criaturas. Entre los mamíferos destacan los perezosos arborícolas, los ciervos de cola blanca, tres especies de osos hormigueros (incluido el oso hormiguero gigante, que consume 30.000 hormigas al día), los magníficos y ruidosos monos aulladores, los monos araña, los monos capuchinos, el simpático y escurridizo mono Tití y un buen número de jaguares. En los bosques sobrevive una población del amenazado tapir de la selva, pariente del caballo y el elefante, siendo el mamífero más grande del país.
Costa Rica cuenta con unas 82 familias de aves y más de 900 especies individuales, entre ellas el mítico Quetzal, cuyas plumas eran más valiosas que el oro para los antiguos mayas y es legendario como símbolo de libertad ya que los quetzales se niegan rotundamente a vivir en cautividad.
Además del turismo ornitológico y zoológico, los entusiastas de las actividades al aire libre pueden practicar snorkeling y buceo, andar en kayak, pesca deportiva, surf, senderismo o hacer cabalgatas por la playa y la selva.
Si necesita descansar de las maravillas de la naturaleza, también hay yacimientos arqueológicos como el Monumento Nacional de Guayabo y las esferas de piedra de la misteriosa cultura Diquis. También se pueden hacer compras de muebles de madera y artículos de cuero fabricados de forma sostenible, por los que Costa Rica es famosa. Por supuesto, también se puede pasar el rato con algunas de las personas más agradables del planeta y tomarse una cerveza Imperial bien fría.
