<div>Help Joaquín Heal: Still Without a Diagnosis, But Full of Hope

<div>I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for support for my nephew Joaquín, a brave and joyful little boy from Lima, Peru, who has been battling a serious and complicated health situation for weeks. As of today, we still don’t have a clear diagnosis, and his condition remains unstable.

<div>It all began in March, when we got a call from his school saying Joaquín had a fever and ear pain. He was taken to the emergency room and diagnosed with a throat infection. He was given antibiotics and fever medication, and we thought he would soon recover.
</div>

<div>But in May, the fevers came back—this time even stronger, reaching 39°C (102°F). At first, doctors believed it was viral. A few days later, however, his condition worsened. On May 11, the fever spiked again. We visited a private clinic, where they said it wasn’t viral but another throat infection and prescribed antibiotics. Soon after, Joaquín’s left side began to swell: his nose, eye, throat, ear, and even his left leg, making it hard for him to walk.

<div>We went from hospital to hospital in Lima, but some had no pediatricians available. Meanwhile, Joaquín kept having high fevers every few hours, and his leg continued to swell. At one hospital, they suggested it might be an allergic reaction, gave him antihistamines, and the swelling went down slightly, but he still couldn’t walk.

<div>On May 17, things took a scarier turn: Joaquín had another high fever and began to experience intense headaches, which was unusual for him. We took him to a hospital that suggested hospitalization. They suspected conjunctivitis and a leg strain, but once we shared that he has a heart device on his left side, they referred us elsewhere, saying they couldn’t treat him without active insurance.

<div>Thankfully, we arrived at the Children’s Hospital in Lima, where he was finally admitted and just in time. The doctors told us his body was not just fighting one illness but was overwhelmed by several serious conditions:
</div>
<div>•	Complicated cellulitis
</div>
<div>•	Chronic pansinusitis (pus-filled sinus infection)
</div>
<div>•	Thrombosis in his left leg
</div>
<div>•	Severe neutropenia (very low immune defenses)
</div>
<div>•	Low white blood cells, elevated platelets
</div>
<div>•	Ongoing high fevers every few hours
</div>

<div>They ran many tests: chest X-rays, leg ultrasounds, CT scans, and even a bone marrow test (which initially ruled out leukemia, thank God). He had to have a catheter placed in his neck on June 3rd because his veins are now too weak and swollen to handle the strong medications through regular IVs.

<div>On June 4, he underwent surgery to drain and clean his nasal passages from the pansinusitis. He went 24 hours without a fever but unfortunately, the fevers returned the next day.
</div>

<div>Joaquín has been in the hospital for weeks, still with no confirmed diagnosis, unable to walk normally, and with limited contact with us due to his fragile immune system. His parents have been by his side this whole time, unable to work, trying to stay strong and hopeful through all of this.
</div>

<div>Estoy escribiendo esta campaña con el corazón en la mano para pedir apoyo para mi sobrino Joaquín, un niño valiente y lleno de vida que, desde hace semanas, enfrenta una situación de salud muy delicada. Hasta el día de hoy, no tiene un diagnóstico claro y su estado sigue siendo inestable.

<div>Todo comenzó en marzo, cuando el colegio nos llamó porque Joaquín tenía fiebre y dolor de oídos. Lo llevamos a emergencias y le encontraron la garganta inflamada. Le recetaron antibióticos y paracetamol, y pensamos que se iba a recuperar.

<div>Pero en mayo volvió a hacer fiebre alta, llegando a los 39°C. Fuimos otra vez a emergencias, donde dijeron que era viral. Unos días después, el 11 de mayo, tuvo otra fiebre fuerte. Esta vez fuimos a una clínica privada porque no había pediatra en el hospital. Nos dijeron que era otra vez una infección en la garganta y le recetaron antibióticos.

<div>Poco después, empezó a inflamarse del lado izquierdo: la nariz, el ojo, la garganta, el oído y también la pierna izquierda, tanto que ya no podía caminar.
</div>

<div>Fuimos de hospital en hospital aquí en Lima, pero en varios no había pediatra. Las fiebres seguían, a veces subiendo hasta 39.7°C cada pocas horas. En un hospital nos dijeron que podía ser una reacción alérgica y le aplicaron antihistamínicos, lo que ayudó un poco, pero seguía sin poder caminar.

<div>El 17 de mayo en la madrugada, Joaquín volvió a tener fiebre alta y un dolor de cabeza muy fuerte, algo raro en él. Fuimos a otro hospital, donde recomendaron hospitalización. Pensaban que era conjuntivitis y un desgarro en la pierna. Cuando mencionamos que Joaquín tiene un dispositivo en el corazón (lado izquierdo), nos preguntaron por su historial médico, pero al no tener seguro activo, nos dijeron que no podían atenderlo.

<div>Finalmente, llegamos al Hospital del Niño en Lima. Gracias a Dios, ahí sí lo recibieron y nos dijeron que llegamos justo a tiempo. El doctor fue claro: no era solo una cosa, sino que el cuerpo de Joaquín estaba reaccionando de muchas formas al mismo tiempo.

<div>Entre los diagnósticos y hallazgos médicos estaban:
</div>
<div>•	Celulitis complicada
</div>
<div>•	Pansinusitis crónica (pus en los senos paranasales)
</div>
<div>•	Trombosis en la pierna izquierda
</div>
<div>•	Neutropenia severa (defensas muy bajas)
</div>
<div>•	Leucocitos bajos, plaquetas elevadas
</div>
<div>•	Fiebres constantes cada 3–4 horas
</div>

<div>Le hicieron todo tipo de pruebas: rayos X de tórax, ecografías, tomografías, análisis de sangre… También una prueba de médula ósea (con resultado preliminar que, gracias a Dios, descarta leucemia). El 3 de junio le colocaron un catéter en el cuello, ya que las venas de brazos y pies ya no resistían las vías por la fuerza de los medicamentos.

<div>El 4 de junio, lo operaron para limpiar y aspirar las fosas nasales por la pansinusitis. Tras la cirugía, pasó 24 horas sin fiebre, pero lamentablemente al día siguiente volvió con temperaturas de 38°C por la mañana y por la noche.

<div>Hasta hoy, no tenemos un diagnóstico definitivo. Joaquín sigue hospitalizado, sin poder recibir visitas por su sistema inmunológico debilitado, y sin caminar con normalidad. Sus padres han estado con él todos estos días, sin poder trabajar, enfocados solo en su hijo y buscando respuestas.
