After 2 long years of trying to get MRI’s and CT scans Gary went into his dentist where she noticed a large mass on the left side of his face. She took an X-ray and said there was nothing she could do so she sent him to a facial surgeon the very next day. After seeing the facial surgeon he told Gary that whether this was cancer or not he would be in for a very large surgery. He did not feel comfortable doing it because of the extent of it. Gary was referred down to the U of M hospital. Within that week he had an appointment. After seeing the facial surgeon there they told him that he would have to have a bone graft because this tumor still not knowing if it was cancer or not had ate away his mandible and the only thing hold things together was the mass. They told him he would be in the hospital for at least 10-12 days. The first 5 would be in ICU with a feeding tube and ventilator. That he would have to learn to talk and possibly even swallow again. However, before they wanted to do surgery the needed a biopsy, 4 CT scans, and 2 MRI’s. They did a needle biopsy that day. With the findings before he even left that hospital room he was redirected back to the facial surgeon. Once he got back up to that office they said they now needed a tissue biopsy which would be done that day as well. After waiting for the results which felt like years. The verdict was in it was malignant tumor. Still unsure of what exact type it was, they knew it was however some sort of blood cancer. After these finding they decided they needed to do another biopsy this time a bone marrow biopsy. Gary met back with the doctors and they told him it is a rare cancer called plasmacytoma and that this type of cancer is even rarer in the face. However, when they did the PET scan it shows cancer activity in some of the lymph nodes. The doctor said that this cancer does not move to the nodes so they yet again must do another biopsy this time from the lymph nodes looking for a second cancer.
As of right now we do not know the finding of that biopsy but we do know that Gary will start out with radiation for at least 5 1/2 weeks Monday through Friday everyday at the University of Michigan. This is being done there because none of this is doing the norm.
He will be driving from Farwell Michigan to Ann Arbor Michigan daily.
This Go Fund Me is to help the Parks family with medical expenses, household bills, gas, and lodging. Due to his illness. Gary is unable to work and his wife Kelly is taking care of him daily so it is hard for her to maintain a job with all the traveling they will be doing. Plus she is in school full time for nursing.
Please lets help the Parks family and show them they are not in this fight alone.
