Love & Life for John Kelly

I know cancer touches close to home for almost anyone reading this...This is my Grandpa, John Kelly. He was recently diagnosed with skin cancer, stage 4 metastatic melanoma. The treatments that look hopeful end up falling through. We thought he could recieve treatment from one of the doctors on the recent PBS documentary that aired this month but he doesn't take anyone older than 66, my grandfather is 72. We are running out of options and have been given the option of running genetic testing because he has a rare form of mutation.

Insurance does not cover this breakthrough testing and there is no financial assistance covered at this time. Usually genetic testing will only test 300-500 genes but this testing will analyze all of them, about 22,000. With this information we can use target therapy, to target the cancer cells and not any of the healthy cells. The cost of this testing is $32,500 and $700 in lab fees. Some of the first people to receive this testing will get some of the costs covered, making it only $12,500.

We need funding for this ASAP, the sooner the better. The longer we wait the more the cancer will spread. My grandfather has already had 2 surgeries and had multiple lymph nodes removed and has suffered multiple complications. The systemic port placed to initially give him immunotherapy against the cancer was infected and he got septic. He was in the hospital for about 2 weeks through Thanksgiving and on antibiotics for 3 months after that. After his most recent surgery, the cancer was attached to one of the main lymph ducts in his neck and he is now experiencing more complications where the area is constantly draining chyle.

My great-grandmother, his mother is 97, that is 25 more years (and counting) my grandpa could spend with us...laughing, and playing, and watching us grow up. Being there for our big life moments, and even the little ones, because even the little moments are what makes life so big. Any amount of money helps and even if you can't provide a donation then please share, I can't begin to say how much of a difference one share could make.

Mahalo for taking the time out of your day to read this.

Cancer cannot be beaten unless we team up against it. Please help be a part of the team.
