The Johnathan Harrington Medical Fundraiser is designed to raise funds to support the medical expenses,food,transportation,care,and special needs associated with Johnathan's care. Our target is $6000.
Johnathan is 12 years old and was recently diagnosed with a secondary Chiari Malformation of the brain which has been causing continual headaches and neck pain since August 2018. It took several months and multiple doctors appointments, medication trials, X-rays, and a MRI to finally discover in February 2019 that he had this brain malformation that was compressing the cerebellum and displacing the cerebral spinal fluid around his brain and spinal cord. Without surgery to relieve the compression it could eventually lead to paralysis. Surgery was scheduled for April 12, 2019. While waiting for this surgery Johnathan was also undergoing labs to check his liver enzymes due to taking so much Ibuprofen to control the headaches and neck pain. After several repeat bloodwork labs his pediatrician made a referral to a gastroenterologist (GI). The GI doctor ordered a liver ultrasound and a biopsy. Tests results revealed that Johnathan also has Autoimmune Hepatitis which is a lifelong disorder that he will have to manage with medication.
Johnathan received the Chiari decompression surgery on April 12th and is recovering in ICU with the hopes of going into a regular room soon. We pray that his liver does not start to fail and have to have steroids before the incision on his head has a chance to fully heal. Steroids interfere with the healing process and may cause more complications. In a few weeks he will begin medication treatment for his Autoimmune disorder. We’ve already had multiple doctors visits, diagnostic procedures, trials with medication and now surgery. Johnathan will have to endure many more medical follow-ups, MRIs, medication, and time missed from school, baseball, and church activities. Johnathan is a strong young man that loves school, baseball, helping people, and most importantly the Lord. He has a generous spirit and is smart as a whip. He is so ready to stop the pain in his head and neck, get the liver under control, and go back to being a healthy, happy pre-teen.
