John Shorrtt Legends-Paul Carberry

I first met John Shorrt when I was 15 years old, himself and Conor O'Dwyer came to school horses for my father. From the first day I met John we were always the best of friends.

John was great man and it was always a pleasure to be in his company. He was a kind and generous man and I don’t think you will ever meet someone with a bad word to say about him.

It was with great sadness I learnt that John had got Cancer, the dreaded and horrible disease that affects so many people and their families. Even though I know how common cancer is, you never expect to happen to one of your family members or one of your friends.

John put up a long hard tough fight with the terrible disease, but he lost the battle on his 53rd birthday, 13th February 2017.

John is survived by his wife Anne Marie and his young six year old daughter Alex. The week prior to John's passing he and Alex got the news that they had finally been granted planning permission to build the family home they had always dreamed off.

On Thursday 19th October, in the form of the John Shorrtt Legneds Day, Johns Family and Friends are coming together to help Anne Marie and Alex raise money to build their new home, the home Anne Marie should of been building and sharing with her devoted and loving husband and Alex, her adoring father.

The John Shortt Legends day is at Punchestown Racecourse and the day will feature the Legends Jockey Challenge Race which will see many familiar household names make a return to the saddle following varying times of absence from competitive racing.

I want to support my late friend John and his family by riding in the race, it will be the first time I have ridden since Sept 2015, where I suffered a fall at Listowel, which ended my race riding career.

I will be riding against other friends of Johns and legends of the sport. The following names will be lining up on 16th October:

Conor O’Dwyer
Peter Niven
Lorcan Wyer
Brendan Sheridan
Charlie Swan
Graham Bradley
Richard Hughes
Andrew Coonan
Luke Harvey
Jamie Osborne
Paul Carberry
Norman Williamson
Martin Lynch,Brendan Powell
John Cullen
Philip Dempsey

I am looking forward to this challenge and I want to do my very best for Anne Marie and Alex to get the home they deserve and a home that will hopefully make their life without John a little easier.

I am urging people to support this amazing cause and if you can spare a few quid, however much it is would be thankfully received.
