Thank you for taking interest in my campaign! Allow me to introduce myself, my goal, and the rewards I am offering.
John Shoemaker was born and raised in York, Pennsylvania. As a child he spent much of his time in the outdoors and near the sea; fishing, hiking, and cycling, and traveling often to Delaware and the Outer Banks in North Carolina with his family. During his teenage years, he became very interested in the visual arts, particularly observational drawing, oil painting, and some sculpture, with a heavy interest in local history. His first exposure to glass happened at age 16 when he began constructing stained glass windows. He pursued his artistic interests at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he first discovered glass blowing. At this point, John's work shifted to primarily sculpture utilizing wood, glass, and other materials, as well as functional or decorative glass objects. Much of his work is inspired by material history, traditional and industrial craftsmanship, nautical history, and mechanical forces. John has attended workshops at Penland School of Crafts, Corning Museum of Glass, and Pilchuck Glass School, and has exhibited work in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Pensacola, Florida. John currently resides in Americus, Georgia, and is the sole proprietor of Apothecary Architecture.
In pursuit of my continued professional development, I have received an Artist-in-Residence opportunity at the prestigious Duncan McClellan Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, to occur this September. This month-long endeavor includes ample studio time to develop my body of work and mentoring from Duncan McClellan, an expert artist and gallerist. The residency will culminate in an exhibition opening in October, 2017. More information on Duncan McClellan Gallery may be found at www.dmglass.com
As an emerging artist, this Artist Residency is an unprecedented opportunity to engage a new audience, create new work, and establish new insight as an exhibiting artist.
The purpose of this campaign is to raise funds to cover a variety of associated expenses and in return you will receive my carefully handcrafted work. My expenses include travel to and from St. Petersburg (once for the month of September, once for the gallery opening in October, and once to retrieve work at the end of the exhibition.), glass color and other sculpture supplies, as well as food, rent, shipping/packaging of work/rewards, vehicle insurance and maintenance, and clothing.
I thank you all in advance, especially my instructors, mentors, friends, family, and colleagues for all the support, advice, and critical dialogue throughout the years, and to all potential patrons for your consideration in helping me achieve my goals as a professional artist. I would also like to thank Duncan McClellan Gallery for selecting me for the Artist-in-Residence Program, and their generosity and interest in my career.
