John Rose and Penny Lean - Cycling Accident Fund

Donation protected

Rose is home and continuing his recovery with the support of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital rehab team.

The focus is on strengthening his core, ensuring his wounds heal and keeping his mind busy.

He is unable to lift anything for another six weeks and needs to be careful with twisting/turning movements.

Rose and his family are forever grateful for the love and support of this community.

Rose is back in the spinal ward at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and continuing to show the world his mental and physical strength.

Pain is high after the specialist team got him upright late yesterday (Friday, April 7)

They had to do this for his lung function and also for a standing X-ray (bedside) to check the hardware placing

Rose now has a Niki pump inserted which is a device in the belly that delivers continuous medication to help with the pain.

Penny says

“We cannot begin to express the depth of gratitude we feel for our Ohana, our family, our friends, both here in Australia and in America and our school community for surrounding us with love & support in every way imaginable and for holding us up in prayer.

We feel so humbled and blessed and truly could not have made it through this time without you”

Rose, Penny, Lela and Jack would like to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has shared and donated.

It means the world to them and your support will never be forgotten.

Rose had a tough and lengthy seven-hour surgery yesterday (April 3) at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. He had lots of screws inserted into his bones - so he will give the "bionic man" a run for his title.

Neuro visited today (Tuesday, April 4) and they're closely monitoring tingling in his arms.

The respiratory physio has also visited and will attempt to get Rose to sit/lay upright to protect his lung function.

He is recovering in ICU and will be moved back to the spinal wards when it is safe to do so.

Thank you again for all your love

On Wednesday, March 29 Penny Lean received a call that rocked her family’s world.

Her husband John Rose had been out cycling on the Sunshine Coast.

He was found unconscious in a ditch by a woman who noticed his unattended bike on the road.

The circumstances are still being investigated but it is believed he was likely struck by a car, and the driver failed to notice or stop.

He was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition where doctors determined he had come within millimetres of being paralysed.

He’s in a hospital bed today with a broken T3-T6 vertebrae which has included spinal cord injury- fractures in his skull, orbital bone and sinus, neck fractures and sternum and rib fractures.

He will need further surgery as doctors are aiming to prevent further spinal cord injury or paralysis.

It will be a long road to recovery - with surgery, rehabilitation and adjustments to home life.

Rose is one the most beautiful humans you’ll meet.

A kind hearted father and a gentle loving husband.

A former Marine, Rose’s integrity, leadership, sense of humor and huge heart (sometimes hidden under that tough exterior ) have remained true.

Rose’s friends, family and Buderim’s Immanuel Lutheran College are already doing everything they can to help Rose’s wife and gorgeous daughter and son in this challenging time, but his path back to health will be a long one.

The money raised will help Penny remain bedside to love and support Rose - without the added stress of juggling extra work.

Rose’s capacity to work in the near future is uncertain.

The money raised will also be used to fund rehabilitation, recovery and home adjustments.

Any small amount will be graciously accepted and we can not thank you enough

All funds (minus Go Fund Me admin fees) will be passed to the family via direct bank transfer - once the fundraiser is complete. This may take 1-2 business days
