On Friday night we lost a family member.
To the staff and regulars of Pawn & Co and 29th Apartment, John McCarthy was our protector, ally, colleague, confidant, hug giver, side kick, comedian, rock, and friend.
John passed away peacefully, just metres from his post at a venue that he loved - a venue that loved him back.
John was more than a number to us. He had our back and we had his. He will never be forgotten and his legacy lives on with every cheeky smile, every chocolate bar and every cheerful chuckle shared amongst friends at Pawn & Co.
It is testament to John's strength of character the outpouring of love and support that has been shown since Friday. We would like to thank you for the solidarity shown to John's family and to our staff during what has been a very tough time. It would have made the big guy crack the biggest smile to know how cherished he was by all those that had shared time with him over his journey.
While John has spent the last few years working with us, his broad grin was well known across many venues, and we know that this blow has affected many of us at many bar and club doors across Melbourne.
Following John's service on Saturday morning, there will be a wake held at Pawn & Co with all money taken over the bar going towards this campaign.
