<div>Many of you will know John and how he has devoted his long and active life to his local community. His commitment to working for social equality and justice for all, his life-long devotion to and activism in the peace movement, and his dedicated work over many years as a Green Party councillor (the first to be elected in the UK in 1985 and serving for the next 36 years), are testimony to a life lived in the service of others.

<div>As a member of Stroud District Council planning committee, John helped prevent many unsightly developments happening in the town and surrounding area. He was pivotal in preventing the Hill Paul building being demolished, saving Uplands Post Office, and the purchase by the town council of Lansdown Hall. In 2017 John was also instrumental in helping head off the privatisation of our historic, now thriving and much-loved Subscription Rooms.

<div>John was elected as Mayor of Stroud for ten civic years, and in recognition of his devoted work for the community was designated the title of the first Honorary Freeman of Stroud in 2020.

<div>Now in his latter years, John is himself in need of support (24/7 on a one-to-one basis). He suffered a stroke in 2022 and has also developed Alzheimer’s disease. John’s wish is to end his days at home, and his dedicated family and friends are determined that John should be able to do this.
</div>

</div>
<div>However, there is now an urgent need for some respite care for John. Due to the nature of his illness, he has very restless nights and frequent panic attacks, and those supporting him (especially his wife, Laura), need to replenish their resources to ensure that John can continue to be cared for in his own home.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Respite care is very expensive, and this fund-raising campaign has been launched to raise the necessary extra funds to pay for this now essential care. In the last year John has had several stays in local care homes. It very quickly became clear that without one-to-one support, he couldn’t cope and even with frequent daily visits from his wife and friends his needs could not be met.

<div>The money raised will cover the extra cost of providing either additional one-to-one support in the nursing home, particularly in the evening and through the night, or temporary live-in care 24/7 in John’s home. This will be the only way to enable any respite to be successful.
