Help Joey study in Japan

Donation protected
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and check out my GoFundMe campaign. I am grateful for this opportunity, and even more so, for the people who are supporting me to move toward and through this adventure.

When I was six years old, my first international travels took me to Spain, England, and Morocco. This opened up my worldview, and a seed of desire was planted within me. The seed was a desire to travel, explore the world and learn from different cultures and traditions. My second trip abroad was to Thailand in 2017. This was an important experience, as I was introduced to Asia; a completely new part of the world. This integral experience inspired me to find a way to see more of Asia.

After a study abroad opportunity in Argentina was proposed to me, I gave it some thought and spoke with a few of my dad’s friends. Argentina didn’t seem to pull me at that moment. During Thanksgiving, I visited the friend we had traveled to Asia with, Naval and his wife, Krystle. On the ride there, my dad and I spoke about the possibility of studying in Japan. I opened up to this idea, and it was really set in stone after discussing it with Naval, as he had been to Japan numerous times. What Japan has to offer intrigued me enough to apply for the program beginning this June!

Not only am I excited to experience a completely different culture than the one I’ve acclimated to here in California, I’m really looking forward to immersing myself into a skill, I’ve already begun to cultivate. I’ve practiced martial arts for almost half of my life thus far, and Capoeira specifically, up until just a few short years ago. My physical practices, and sports are the cornerstone of my life, and I’m really looking forward to diving back into martial arts while I’m in Japan, perhaps Aikido. I’m hoping to fully immerse myself in the Japanese culture and learn everything I can including the language and traditions.

This trip is going to be the experience of a lifetime. I have no doubt about that. I want to share this adventure with you, so I’ll be regularly posting videos and poetry on my specifically dedicated youtube channel: Joey in Japan. I invite you to join me through this channel, and I also invite you to support me by donating anything you can. Even $1 will help me move closer to my goal of $15,000 to fund this incredibly opportunity in its entirety. This includes a group orientation with the study abroad organization, Youth for Understanding, in Chicago, this June, and my flight, accomodation with my host family and all other costs associated with attending a Japanese High School!
