Joey Smart Medical Bills Fund

Donation protected
I have known Joey Smart since he was a mite hockey player in the Newark Ice Hockey Association. I watched Joey grow up playing hockey and being a friend to my son Jake.  I consider him and his family dear friends. Here is his story.

Joey was debilitated by Guillain-Barre Syndrome(GBS) in Dec 2009. Although he missed most of his junior year of high school, he was able to recover after eight months, with some lingering effects. After graduating high school he was able to manage his symptons and earn an education degree from Ohio University and become a math teacher. In Jan 2017, he was afflicted again, however this time much more severely. In addition to severe neurological and autonomic issues he became severely malnourished. Joey has been unable to return to work and has had to give up his apartment and all of his independence. Without employment, and his savings gone, he has no way to pay his monthly insurance premium or the mounting medical bills. Without insurance, he will not be able to receive total parenteral nutrition (TPN) which has been effective in the start of his recovery. Joey continues to see a team of doctors on a monthly basis, home health nurse comes to the house 2 times a week and recently has been referred to another specialist at the Cleveland Clinic.

These funds will be used to pay for monthly medical insurance premium and out of pocket medical bills.
