Joey "Bud" Lyons Medical Treatment

In September of this year Joey “Bud” Lyons was diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer.

After numerous tests and appointments with the medicals professionals at UCSF, It was deemed the best course of action was for Joey to undergo surgery to remove the cancerous tumor from the base of his tongue. 

On December 12th Joey underwent a 20 hour major surgical procedure in which the cancerous tumor and lymph nodes were removed from the base of his tongue.  His tongue was then reconstructed with muscle from both of his thighs. 

Following on from the initial recovery from such a major surgery Joey will have to undergo months of radiation therapy and follow up visits to UCSF.

He will also have to attend speech therapy in the upcoming months to help regain the full use of his tongue.

Joey will need full time care for a period of time to help recover from the surgery on December 12th once he is discharged from hospital, and also during the period of time he is receiving the intensive radiation therapy.  His sisters and extended family will be travelling from the east coast and Ireland to provide this care and assistance.

Anyone in the Irish community in the Sunset will know Joey.  He has lived in the sunset since 1998 and is as iconic as the Golden Gate Bridge by now!  Joey is a proud man who would not ask for help from anyone, but does need financial help right now.  That is why this fund is set up.   Joey will unable to work for the foreseeable future.  In which time there will be medical bills, medications, follow up treatments, accommodation for full time care givers, and basic day to day living expense to pay for.
