On the 7th July Joel suffered severe burns to 25% of his body when his friend threw petrol on a bonfire which ended up on my son, igniting him with the fuel. Joel was burnt from his waist up including his hands, chest and face.
Joel has spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital after surgery where he has had skin grafts done to both hands and left arm. He has a donated skin on his face and will be having further surgery on Tuesday 24th July to assess whether skin grafts are required on his face.
Joel is now in the Burns Unit and is undergoing daily physiotherapy and dressing changes until he is well enough to come home. He will need to continue regular visits to the hospital for physio and dressing changes for some time and will be required to wear compression garments over his burns for what could be 2 years from what we have been told. The thought of having to wear compression garments is so hard for him to come to terms with. This is the time Joel should be having the time of his life.
It will be quite some time before Joel can return to work as he was working as a pipe layer which is not only a physical job but now exposure to the sun will not be an option.
This accident is life changing for my young man and he has a long road to recover both physically and mentally.
I am not one to ask for help but today I swallow my pride and ask for your help for Joels recovery.
