Joel and Lizzy Makin

Lizzy is a strong, brave, and fiercely loving person. She has been a special education teacher for the past 5 years. Recently, she changed jobs to be a Children’s Ministry Director and Preschool Director at her local church as she was feeling both the pressure of becoming a new mom and the call to serve more directly at her church. On top of this, she is also the county coordinator for Special Olympics of Wabash County and has been for the past 2 years (after being the track coach and all-around volunteer for 9 years).

She has fought and beat cancer two times in her life. First, when she was 21 and again when she was 24. With the first round of cancer (in her upper right thigh) she was told she would never walk again due to having half of her right thigh removed, but she defied those odds and actually water skied with her brother-in-law, Aaron, just to prove the point for how strong prayer, love and support is.

During the second round with cancer (in her groin area), Lizzy was told that “there was nothing modern medicine could do,” although once again, defying the odds and finding treatment with a specialist in Indy, drawing friends close and prayer. Not only did she recover, she found her soul-mate, Joel, and has been married for the past 3 years.

Due to her various treatments with chemo/radiation/surgeries she was told to not expect to have children. She and Joel were able to defy the odds once again and get pregnant in October of 2016. However, due to the multiple surgeries in the that area she lost the pregnancy. Teased with the ability to have kids, Lizzy and Joel decided that maybe they were called to foster to adopt. However, 2 days before getting on the list (after an extensive process to get approved) Lizzy and Joel got pregnant with Charli Louise.

Excited and in shock, Lizzy and Joel had a great first 7 weeks (past the point where the pregnancy was lost before) and felt very hopeful. Then, she was diagnosed with cancer for the third time. This time feels different. Unlike the times before, she is married and has a child on the way.

She is currently in the hospital waiting to give birth 3 weels early at 37 weeks. They are more than happy with where she is at now. At 7 weeks pregnant the doctors said that Lizzy would need to give birth at 20 weeks in order to stop the cancer from growing. With prayer, strong support and big miracles, she has made it to 37 weeks with only recent growth that has concerned the doctors.

Lizzy will start cancer treatment 3 days after Charli’s birth, for the next 16 weeks. This will be followed by surgery to remove the tumor. After that, they will start Lizzy on multiple rounds of radiation treatment. Lizzy, Joel and Charli will need help with travel expenses, lodging and lost wages while she continues her fight for recovery.
