On Friday March 4th, my brother and friend, Joe Bracchitta, was enjoying one of his favorite things to do in this world -- skiing with a group of friends at Killington. On this day Joe fell and hit his head resulting in a very serious injury. Thankfully, and as always, Joe was wearing his helmet, which likely saved his life. He was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where the Neurological Surgical and Trauma Teams have been treating Joe for a traumatic brain injury.
My brother has always had a boundless zest for life. What makes him special is the unbridled way he engages in whatever he does, whether it’s honing his skills for his career in sales and business, or a new recreational activity, or ordering off the menu at a restaurant. His passions include his wife Lori, his dog Fred, being outdoors skiing, hiking or golfing, and sharing great food and wine, meaningful conversation and silly jokes while surrounded by family and friends. Laughter is always a key ingredient to time spent with Joe. That is why he has touched so many people, who joyfully get sucked into his vortex and enjoy the ride with him.
Joe has a big heart. He is known for embracing others and taking on their burdens as his own. It seems he always has the capacity to take on more, and giving back to worthy causes has always been important to him.
At the writing of this, Joe has made progress but remains in a coma. This is consistent with the guidance the doctors have given us. They advised us that this type of injury requires a long recovery over many months, and it will be made with many small steps. Joe will leave the ICU to a specialized Neurology Unit at Dartmouth Hitchcock MC, and then transfer to a brain rehabilitation facility where he will undergo many, many months of rehabilitation. While we wait for Joe to wake up, our family, and especially Joe's devoted wife, Lori, and his mother Norma continue to surround Joe with love and attention. The countless prayers and good wishes have been uplifting at our most difficult times.
Friends of Joe and our family have asked how they can help. We truly appreciate all the flowers, food and prayers. However, after much thought and discussion, we have come to the realization that the best way to help Joe and Lori would be through donations towards Joe’s round-the-clock clock medical care and on-going rehabilitation. Lori and our family have been under tremendous emotional stress since the incident. Knowing people care and come together so that Joe will have the financial resources to return to a life extraordinary will help the healing process of Joe, Lori and all of his family and friends.
