I have known Dena since I began working for BBVA Compass seventeen years ago. My sweet friend was single for most of that time, and always said that she was waiting for the perfect guy to come along. Five years ago, he finally showed up......
In January of 2014 Dena met, and fell in love with Joseph Dipiazza. Thanks to some sneaky friends they found in each other, the one person who would complete each of them. Very much in love, and grateful to have found each other, Dena and Joe were married in January of 2015 and began their life together.
In February of 2018, Joe was diagnosed with Stage Four Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma. Devastated by the diagnosis, they were determined to be optimistic, and Joe began his battle against Lymphoma.
In the past year Joe has completed four different kinds of chemotherapy, twenty-two radiation treatments, and a stem cell transplant. These treatments were successful in eliminating all of the original tumors, but unfortunately new tumors developed as well and Joe's diagnosis remains unchanged. To ensure every possible treatment available is pursued, Joe's doctor has referred him to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, for CAR T Cell Therapy. This is a type of cancer immunotherapy that works with the patient's immune system by reprogramming their T-(fighter) cells. Joe and Dena (along with all thier loved ones and friends) fervently hope that this treatment will put him in remission. In order to complete this treatment, several roundtrips flights from Birmingham to Houston are needed, along with a four to six week stay in Houston while Joe undergoes the Car T Cell treatment. As many of you know, this kind of diagnosis and the treatment can put a significant strain on a person emotionally, physically, and financially. Insurance only covers so much, and this treatment will require Joe and Dena to cover all of the living expenses for the extended stay in Houston, in addition to the treatment costs not covered by insurance.
Many of you have asked what you could do to help, or how you could support Joe and Dena during this time. So I am asking all of you who want to help, please donate what you can. If we can raise enough to cover their expenses in Houston, this is one less thing for them to worry about, and they can focus entirely on Joe's treatment.
More than money though, I am asking for each of you to join me in praying for Joe and Dena. That God will use this treatment to heal Joe and put him in remission, that Joe and Dena will experience peace that surpasses all understanding, that they will be comforted and supported during this time, and that God will use this situation to make his glory known.
