Joe and Kelsie’s Story:
Joe Duff and Kelsie King-Duff were so excited to welcome their first child last year. Up until their 18-week appointment, everything was going great. They found out they were having a boy, but also that there were major concerns with brain development. On June 25, 2019 their sweet baby boy, Jack Michael Duff, was stillborn at 23 weeks. It was determined Jack had L1 Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. After months of testing, Kelsie and Joe learned that Kelsie is a carrier for this disorder. Since it is so rare, it is not tested for in any genetic screenings so this could not have been known prior to pregnancy. Because Kelsie is a carrier, it is likely this disorder would be passed down with each pregnancy.
Thanks to a team of amazing doctors at U of M Ann Arbor and Devos Children’s Hospital, Joe and Kelsie learned they are able to pursue in-vitro fertilization with donor eggs as a way to have a family. They are now working with The Fertility Center in Grand Rapids which has doctors that specialize in in-vitro related to genetic disorders. Kelsie’s sister Kirsti King has generously offered to be an egg donor for Joe and Kelsie (Kirsti tested negative for the disorder!) Although they are thrilled, this process is very costly. Costs total $20,374.30 (this is with insurance kicking in about $6,500!)
Joe and Kelsie did not want to ask friends and family for money, but we all know what great people they are and how they are always giving back. Both serve their communities everyday - Joe is a Michigan State Police Trooper at the Gaylord post and Kelsie is the executive director for Boyne City’s downtown organization. In addition to gofundme there will be a fundraiser held that includes a fun afternoon of euchre to help Joe and Kelsie reach their dream of having a family.
