Meet Sam! He is our six year old son that loves to tell knock- knock jokes, sing songs, and wheel around the hospitals and school to say “howdie” to anyone he meets. Sam also loves to hear about his older brother Nicholas’ hockey games and watch hockey on TV with his brothers and dad. He makes hilarious home videos with his older sister Lilia almost every day documenting something silly.
Sam has survived some of the toughest odds ever seen! He was born with multiple anomalies including a malabsorption syndrome called short bowel syndrome, spina bifida, autism, and a rare bone disorder that caused Sam to need a left foot amputation. Sam had a life expectancy of two years old. Since birth, Sam has had over 20 surgeries and has been diagnosed with over 10 disorders. Thanks to an incredible team of doctors and nurses and above all faith, Sam has made it this far. With a smile on his face and a joy in his heart, Sam continues to fight for his life every single day. Each day he is depends on 12 hours of IV nutrition through a central line in his chest. This very IV nutrition that keeps him alive also negatively affects his vital organs. In the nick of time, Sam was fortunate enough to be accepted under a compassion for life clause to receive Omegaven, a non FDA approved fat infusion that has reversed some of his liver damage and has helped keep him alive. This medication is provided by Boston Children’s Hospital. Sam and his mom travel to Boston every other month to see a team of doctors and pick up the miracle drug that they bring back with them. These trips on top of all the other medical related expenses are very strenuous on the family. Sam and his family are asking for your support to help them make these trips to Boston so they can try to focus on giving Sam as many opportunities any other six year old might want.
