I NEED YOUR HELP to raise £400!

Who am I?

I'm an award-winning playwright,  screenwriter, producer ('Foreign Goods', Oberon Books) journalist (Guardian, Hong Kong Free Press, SCMP, LRB) and entrepreneur, and academic.

For almost a decade, I have dedicated my theatre career to producing (for no salary or profit) writers' work from all backgrounds though largely British East Asian and South Asian voices. I single-handedly pitched, curated and edited the publication of the first BEA anthology here in the UK called 'Foreign Goods'. The foreword was written by David Henry Hwang and it has sold over 100 copies throughout the world in its first year. Besides this, with my company Pokfulam Rd Productions , we produced guerilla theatre of exciting short plays at venues such as the Arcola Theatre and Theatre503. Again, the creatives were so enthusiastic about the project, all profits went into renting the space(s).

After being offered the opportunity to develop a new play with the Park Theatre, my first play in 3 years, I am aiming to raise the funds to pay my team as I have been unsuccessful with arts council funding  and funding from other arts bodies and am unable to personally foot the costs. The team I have assembled for this R&D and reading are prolific and extremely talented and in-demand and it is vital they are remunerated for their work.

Why do I need £400?

I am raising funds to support the costs for one day of workshopping/development followed by a public reading of my new play on October 18, 2019. It involves 3  actors,  1 director and myself during a one-day development and a reading to an audience of a new play which discusses journalism from a female perspective as part of the PRISM Project supported by Park Theatre in London for BAME voices take place this October, 2019.

What is the PRISM PROJECT?

The Prism Project is a series of rehearsed readings at Park Theatre that offers free rehearsal space and a professional theatre in which to develop and showcase diverse stories. The project is spearheaded by Park Theatre’s administrator, Melissa Bonnelame, to address the need within the theatre industry to provide support and professional opportunities to BAME creatives.

Who is involved?

The play has 3 actors total, 1 director and myself as writer and producer.

Confirmed so far are award-winning director Max Lindsay (who will be directing Mother of Him  at the Park this fall!) and actors Gilbert Kyem Jnr. and Lucy Roslyn (writer and performer of ORLANDO ). The other female actor will be announced in due course.

What's it about?

The play is about a female journalist's rise and fall in her career. It's a political satire and a human story about the world we live in now. It greatly requires workshopping with a team and an audience to get it into the best shape before taking it to the next stage for a full production.

Where will my money go?

To pay all creatives involved for their time, travel and one-day work. ITC rates  stipulates £69/day. This would equal 69 x 5 =£345

The remaining £55 is for the Go Fund Me Processing fee which will take out 2.9% of the funds garnered. It will also be used for overheads such as printing 5 scripts, marketing & a video (with editing) of the showcase and online feedback to further develop the play. And any other travel costs which may be incurred if actors are travelling from outside of London.

Can I come watch the show?

The reading will be free and open to invited guests, so yes! As a funder you will be invited as a special guest to watch the reading to an informal and supportive audience.
