Promote proper husbandry and maintenance for reptiles and exotics.
Pursing one's passion is indeed a dream of most everyone I’ve ever met. Work all but presents immediate rewards when one enjoys their craft, my craft has become a combination of personal interest and many years of practical work experience: Herpetology. Forty-five years of passion and an active career spanning many states has allowed my family and I to fill what we found as a void in our community. Having managed a local pet store in Los Lunas, NM for several years, family obligations relocated us to Columbus, OH. Being an avid animal lover I have been given many small opportunities over the years to help sick, or ailing pets, some with fur, some with scales, that asked for nothing more than a chance, a person to care for them. Over the course of some 20 years in New Mexico, many “outcast” pets were nursed back to health, or indeed loved and cared for as they never had known, some were fortunate enough to go to new homes, some no less fortunate simply got to know that they were loved and cared for in what were their final years. Upon our arrival in Ohio, one thing that seemed to be a constant in the pet world was the need for some patient and caring souls in the reptile world, and a new chapter of our lives began: Jiminy’s Reptile & Exotic Rescue, circa 2007. This was a true crossroads from working in an actual pet stores, to making my home into a pet sanctuary of sorts. There have been many challenges that we have successfully overcome throughout the years that include retrieval, vet bills, and some rather unique husbandry challenges, each story presenting successes and failures along our journey. A rescue of any sorts presents an odd fascination for most, surely you’ve not dedicated many hours of your life, and thousands of dollars for just the personal satisfaction of what you are doing; this is where many are shocked to find out, this is done out of the love of animals, the feeling of pride one gets to share knowledge, and indeed the countless friends and acquaintances that we have made over the past twenty years. A sad fact in this world exists, most primarily do this for personal gain of some sort, they want to make money, or obtain attention, and the unfortunate side effect of this thinking or business model has presented many challenges in this hobby with some rather stringent legislation being put in place to protect the “public”, and oddly enough not the “pet”. After close to 20 years of practicing and refining my craft and recent changes on local and state legislation a new chapter begins, making the rescue officially a not for profit organization. The ill effect of this is what seems at this point to be an unattainable goal requested from the state to file the paperwork to make this 20-year endeavor, officially, “Official”. So we now need to ask for everyone's help. There are fee's that are involved in filing and obtaining our 501. The even sadder pretext of this comes in the fact that the state of Ohio officially has a fee that must also be paid in subsequent years for the simple processing of taxes. The cost we have been quoted from several law offices is between $2,000 and $3,000. There may be other fee's involved in the future but this is what is needed to get started. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
Yvonne
