A Christmas Story (gone wrong, then right ?)

Recently Chuck Nichols received a call from one James Albert Surges, who had saved his pennies and bought a plane ticket to the U.S. from his adopted homeland, Argentina.  A quick flight to Miami to see old friends, he was then off for a two day stop in Chicago to see his college buddies from Eau Claire.  Chuck had agreed to pick Jim up in Chicago late Saturday or early Sunday to come to Milwaukee for a family holiday and then trips to Madison and Eau Claire to see old friends.  Jim called Chuck on Thursday saying he felt quite ill with a bug and asked Chuck if he could come Friday morning to get him.  Chuck got there and could tell immediately Jim was not feeling well at all. Chuck packed him up quickly and headed to his sister’s place in the Waterford area. They talked some and then Chuck asked what Jim thought he had picked up in Miami or on his various flights. Jim had some serious gastro issues that aren’t uncommon to him nor travelers, but repeated statements on intermittent chest pains was concerning to say the least.  They talked about a quick stop at an urgent care but Jim had concerns about his  lack of health coverage in the States.   With a quick internet search, Chuck found Argentina’s Health Care is even crazier than our own here. The good news is that upon arrive in Waterford, his niece with a little push from Chuck, got Jim to agree to see an Urgent Care  in the area.

Jim called Chuck a while later with a little laugh. He was calling from an ambulance headed to Waukesha Memorial as he apparently had a heart attack somewhere between Miami and Chicago. The severity was unknown. Jim called again after he had an angioplasty, which could not correct the problem, but was left in place in case of an emergency.  Jim entered the OR at 9:00 am on 12/18 and we are waiting to hear the outcome.

Many of is know Jim as a multitalented character who earns a living using his multi-linguist talents as a translator of many forms of text;  text book, novels, governmental documents for UN compliance, etc.  These are all done as an independent contractor meaning he is compensated when he turns in his completed work.  As a freelancer, this setback will be an extreme financial hardship on Jim.  Things like  uncovered medical bills, fee change for his flight home once able,  rehab costs, his rent in Buenos Aries while here,  the list goes on and on.  Post hospital/ before returning to Argentina living arrangements will be covered by family.  Chuck and Mary and have also offered to help out with room and transport to medical appointments.

We have set up a "Go Fund Me” page for some assistance for a classmate, friend, colleague, or just someone needing a bit of help this holiday.   We  hope whoever can will donate a single buck, or whatever you want or can afford this holiday. It would be a blessing for our friend, James Albert Surges.

Updates will be posted along the way for everyone to keep tabs of his progress.  Jim knows nothing of this at this point.  He will  probably kick Chuck's ….. when  he finds out.

Thank you friends for anthing you can do  give Jim an extra hand at this time.  Your thoughts,  prayers and good wishes for Jim's recovery are greatly appreciated!

Jim's niece, Paula Heyer, will be assisting Jim with his Go Fund Me account.
