100 Women2 - Supporting Afghan Women's Education

100 Women 2 - Women Helping Women (walkers 39 & 40/100) - Raising Funds to Support Educational Opportunities for Afgan Women.

100 Women2 is a community of women who are committed to helping other women by actively walking 100kms. Each woman commits to raising $1000 for an issue that directly affects women.

Why am I walking? Who am I walking for?

Jill and Barbara are acutely aware of the abundant and peaceful lives we live in Tasmania, and the employment opportunities and personal growth that education has given us.

We are joining together to raise funds for, and awareness of, Afghan women who are not afforded the same basic rights to education, nor are they afforded economic and individual freedoms. Again, under Taliban rule, living conditions and opportunities in life are extremely poor, and women constantly live at risk of violence, particularly if they break rules and seek an education of their own choice.

Barbara currently works with Gali and Mursal Nazari (an Afghan woman now living in Australia) on the recently established program ‘New Hope’/Omid Now (امید نو) which aims to ensure that a generation of Afghan women continue to have access to higher education.

‘New Hope’/Omid Now (امید نو) is currently facilitating opportunities for a number of women to study in India, Turkey, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Australia.

Our walk is to assist three women (Nazia, Shazia, and Hanifa) seeking to attend the Asian University for Women in Bangladesh (a not for profit university dedicated to women’s education and leadership). The three women currently live in a northern province in Afghanistan and recently travelled for over 7 hours with a male relative (mahram) to Kabul, risking their safety, to undertake their entrance exams over Zoom. With access to only one computer and power outages throughout the day their success in the exam was remarkable. ‘New Hope’/Omid Now (امید نو) will now work to support these women with fee costs, visa requirements and funds to travel to take up this education opportunity.

Your funds will be used towards paying university fees over five years and for transportation costs from Afghanistan to Bangladesh. Funds are paid directly to the Asian University for Women, which is also responsible for safe transportation. Your generosity will support these three women to access higher education without discrimination and to live and study without fearing for their lives.

Who are we?

We are Jill Jones (Walker 39/100) and Barbara Kameniar (Walker 40/100).
We both reside in beautiful Tasmania. Jill works in the environmental field and Barbara is an academic who, for the past 11 years, has been part of an international art exchange project entitled Unfolding Projects. Led by Melbourne artist Gali Weiss, the project has drawn together over 20 Australian women artists and 60 Afghan women artists, curators, teachers and students on two collaborative projects, Two Trees and Making Marks. Unfolding Projects was driven by a desire to connect, show solidarity, and raise awareness of the situation of women and children in Afghanistan.

Both Jill and Barbara are passionate about women supporting women through awareness raising, voice and action. This campaign brings into focus the importance of lifelong education for all women.

More information about New Hope / Omid Now

‘New Hope’/Omid Now (امید نو) is the inspiration of Mursal Nazari, an Afghan women’s rights activist and past director of the Organisation for Afghan Women’s Capabilities (OPAWC). OPAWC provided access to literacy, health, and economic education to some of the poorest women in Kabul and Afghan provinces. After fleeing Afghanistan in September 2021, Mursal and her family were granted Humanitarian Visas in Australia. Mursal immediately began work with her Australian supporters to find a way for women in Afghanistan to regain their lives through education. Thus, the New Hope Program was born.
