Jarvis Griggs Study Abroad Mission

Hello my name is Jarvis Dewayne Griggs. I'm an African American male from Dallas,Texas currently living in New York City. I am a recent graduate of Prairie View A&M University were I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre.  I'm an actor, dancer, and singer working to make a difference in the lives of others, through my artistry, in different communities around the world. I love to promote change, positivity, and inspire others to always present the best version of themselves throughout the trials of life. Currently I am pursuing a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Acting from Columbia University in New York.  

Growing up my Mother experienced life throughout all it's ups and downs, when being a single Mother of three. Yet, she stayed diligent and faithful in her growth as a Mother. She also stayed strong and worked hard to make sure I could be able to do what I loved doing in Theatre, Dance, and Music. She has instilled in me a sense of independence and self worth and I use her teachings to help guide me through life. My faith is a driving force within my life from personal to professional. I believe with faith and hard work come blessings. In my past, I have experienced not having a father around to teach me things a mother can’t teach a boy. Having that pain of not being an important factor in my Father's life really took me to a place of self-pity during those times. Though it left me scarred, I let what I have experienced in my past propel me forward in order to ensure that I have a bright future. Fortunately, I was able to get involved in the Arts. The Arts, allowed me to open that window of expression, and use it as a gateway to finding clarity in the discovery of myself as an artist and human being.

I am so excited to have been given the opportunity to participate in The Tuscan Summer Dance Intensive (TSDI) in Italy for the summer of 2015. TSDI is a 4 week study abroad Dance program that offers solid dance training in the major genres. It provides a significant opportunity to broaden ones scope as a dancer through an excellent selection of interesting forms such as Theatre Dance. It’s a unique program of dance training and cultural tourism that will push my artistic edges and open my mind to how I can learn and grow from a place that’s foreign to me. The program also offers classes in Yoga, Pilates and Body conditioning to help stimulate my mind in a way that I can expand my creativeness as an artist. It will give me a unique experience within the Italian culture as well. TSDI is based in the non-tourist city of Livorno, where I will get a real cultural immersion and see a more normal side of Italy. 

 I believe this program will be beneficial to my career, personal, and life goals. Which is why I am pursuing an MFA in Acting, because it can allow me to find different qualities of myself through exploring and learning from others. Having the opportunity to study dance intensely in another country will help me connect more with my mind and body. An actor’s full body is their instrument within the craft. Being able to be fully aware and in control of my body, voice, and mind will provide me more opportunities in my specific discipline, as well as others. I am here to raise money to help take care of my tuition, and exspenses for the TSDI program. For the four week trip the Tuition is $3,120.00 and the deadline to have it paid in full is May 1, 2015. I come from a family that's experiencing a financial hardship, and I just want to continue to further my education so that I can make my dreams come true of being an amazing actor, dancer, singer, and mentor. Everyday is a blessing for me to be able to further my growth as an artist and individual.  Any donation helps support my growth and I am truly thankful.
