Karina's South Africa Trip

My name is Karina Buruca I am a student at Lesley  University. I've gotten the opportunity to be one of the students to be accepted to the WorldTeach South Africa summer program.

South Africa has experienced a lot of changes in the past years, with the end of apartheid and the establishment of a new government and new social, economic and political systems for the country. It is seen as a model of reconciliation and development. Although impressive progress has been made at a constitutional level, tremendous challenges remain, including very high levels of unemployment and drug abuse, low levels of skills and confidence in poor communities, rapid urbanization, poverty, and the impact of HIV/AIDS. This summer program is designed to help support skills development and instill confidence in young people in this challenging new democracy. 

For the passed two summers I've taught in the Summer Urban Program at the Philips Brooks House Association at Harvard creating my own curriculum and I can't wait to take what I've learned to South Africa.
